Writing the Torah and Honoring the Name of God by Kimberly Burnham 12/16/2015
There was such joy in his voice as Rabbi Kevin Hale talked about going to the river near his house to wash himself in a mikveh (ritual bath) before writing the name of God in the Torah scroll he worked on. Letters gather into words. Words spiral into sacred texts. Each one is different. Each one strives to create a world of peace. Each one calls out a name of God. One of about 100 Torah scribes in the United States, Hale taught a dozen or so attendees at the 2015 Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City, UT, how to sing out each letter and word as we inscribed "... Crossing the Border, Jewish at the Boundaries by Kimberly Burnham 7/24/2015
"You know, I was never Christian. I was born Jewish."
"I know, and your momma and your ema and your grandparents were all born Jewish," I said, deep in conversation with my 6-year-old stepdaughter, Shaya.
"I, on the other hand, am the only one in my family that is Jewish," I added.
"Because you turned Jewish," she piped up.
Three years ago – before I knew anything about this amazing child or her mother, who I fell in love with, or her twin brother and the 9-year-old twins – I decided to bicycle... Read More https://reformjudaism.org/blog/2015/07/24/crossing-border-jewish-boundaries

Peace and a Thorny Tree
Some of Africa’s greatest matriarchs
queens, rebels and freedom fighters
disturbers of the peace
scrubbed from history
but like thorny trees
may serve a purpose
In Zulu or isiZulu
spoken in South Africa and Lesotho
one who disturbs the peace
is compared to a thorny tree and muddy water
"Dunga" is to disturb the peace
make turbid or muddy
stir up mud
befoul liquid or water
"ukudunga amanzi" to befoul the water
"Dungabantu" is an agitator
a disturber of the peace
one who stirs up trouble
literally "dunga" "abantu"
what disturbs the people
making the comfortable uncomfortable
"Dungamuzi" is also a disturber of the peace
literally "dunga" "umuzi"
the village disturber on one hand
a large tree on the other
roots deep known scientifically as "Euclea daphnoides"
and "Euclea natalensis"
the bark and leaves used as a purgative
believed to cause quarreling in the village
"Idungamuzi lehlanze" and "idungamuzi lehlathi"
are nasty thorn trees disliked as firewood
"idungamuzi elinameva" or the thorny scolopia
an idiom for disturber of the peace
"Dungazela" is to mix liquids or to walk blindly
as an absent-minded person does
as if only when we take conscious action
we can create peace "ukuthula"
solve quarrels welcoming a new era
of freedom and peace for all

Healing Summer Blossoms
words strung together
branching and rising
grasping the air like powerful trees
each leaf carries a message
gentle airy insights
connected in space
create vivid images
rises to the challenge
into rich fertile earth
Body and mind
finding a way forward
nourished by red
heat of a Japanese Maple
poignancy of a Weeping Willow
struck with awe by an Oak
Write your own desires
shared like carbon dioxide
on the out breath
transformed by the world's trees
a breath of new life returns
newly unfurled bits of green
the pounding of water rising
to the highest pinnacle
grounded in space
moving through time
connecting sky and earth
Healing Abounds in Tall Trees
Tall trees branching into deep dark night
waking mornings reaching for what they may
'cause water flows to the tip top light
Struggling to reach and by seedlings do right
a diverse green, red, yellow, and brown are they
tall trees branching into deep dark night
Rising again blue birds to house in sight
unseen currents lapping at the edge's bay
'cause water flows to the tip top light
Catching sunbeams spread open like a kite
joy finding space in shade and freedom both okay
tall trees branching into deep dark night
Watching decades pass savoring moments in delight
knowing that now is the time to experience this day
'cause water flows to the tip top light
Health abounds, where is your tip top height
consciousness bending for what you pray
tall trees branching into deep dark night
'cause water flows to tip top light
One cell grows
a seed, an embryo
wind and water,
storm clouds sunlight
all the diverse experiences
for decades or centuries
Reaching into the earth
drawing out nourishment
creating a home for many
food and love for countless
ones that be similar and different
Then when the towering ones
crash to the earth
with hope and kindness
we leave behind
a lifetime of gifts
Gone in body
but generosity and memories forever
for those whose stand now
where we stood

I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter .
As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere. Each poem would link back to your site where the word or language appeared.
I would expect some sort of stipend and a six month to one year placement. Please contact me for details if your organization is interested in having a poet-in-residence to help get your message out. Nervewhisperer@gmial.com
