āThe Kurds are one of the world's largest peoples without a state, making up sizable minorities in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Their history is marked by marginalization and persecution. Yet some Kurds may be on the verge of achieving their century-old quest for independence in a Middle East undergoing the convulsions of Syria's civil war, Iraq's destabilization, and conflict with the self-proclaimed Islamic State. A Woman's Place
"A woman's place is in the houseā¦and the senate, " quips Kristin Hannah. bestselling author of The Nightingale, while Elizabeth Gilbert author of Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia had a slightly different take on a woman's place or role in the world. "A woman's place is in the kitchen...sitting in a comfortable chair, with her feet up, drinking a glass of wine and watching her husband cook dinner." Even in English there is controversy about what and where a woman's place is. It is even more complicated and nuanced when it comes to other languages and cultures. A Woman's Place in the Dictionary by Kimberly Burnham is a collection of before and after poems that look at the word for woman in several languages and what the dictionary entry itself says about women as well as how the definitions before and after the word woman say about her. Some of the poems touch on synonyms and homonyms for the word "woman" in different languages. Women and Dictionary Poetry In the Oxford English dictionary, the word "woman" is defined as an adult human female. The word immediately before it is "woma" meaning a brownish-grey Australian python found in sandy desert areas. The entry after "woman" is "womb." (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/woman) And so in an English dictionary a woman finds herself between a snake and a part of her own body In other languages the word for "woman", "frau" (German), "wahine" (Hawaiian), or "biscuit" (a particularly attractive woman in Rasta or Caribbean Patois) is unique to that language. The words that come before and after "woman" vary from one bilingual dictionary to another. This is a collection of dictionary poems exploring the word "woman" and the context we find ourselves in languages of the world. Writing the Torah and Honoring the Name of God by Kimberly Burnham 12/16/2015
There was such joy in his voice as Rabbi Kevin Hale talked about going to the river near his house to wash himself in a mikveh (ritual bath) before writing the name of God in the Torah scroll he worked on. Letters gather into words. Words spiral into sacred texts. Each one is different. Each one strives to create a world of peace. Each one calls out a name of God. One of about 100 Torah scribes in the United States, Hale taught a dozen or so attendees at the 2015 Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City, UT, how to sing out each letter and word as we inscribed "... I was born Jewish." "I know, and your momma and your ema and your grandparents were all born Jewish," I said, deep in conversation with my 6-year-old stepdaughter, Shaya. "I, on the other hand, am the only one in my family that is Jewish," I added. "Because you turned Jewish," she piped up. Three years ago ā before I knew anything about this amazing child or her mother, who I fell in love with, or her twin brother and the 9-year-old twins ā I decided to bicycle... At seven when the alarm went off you thought about calling in sick but there is just too much to do and then irritated you realized you ran out of breakfast cereal and had a pop tart instead. Your eyes can't focus on the report you are preparing. Last night's head ache is coming back and you wish that you had had time for a better lunch.....It is not a good day for you or your liver.
What would your liver say, if it had a voice, a say in how your life flows, the amount of energy you have, how well you sleep and how happy you are? In fact, your liver is talking all the time, communicating how it feels and is functioning. Here is a brief Liverese to English translation guide, followed by some things you can do to bridge the communication gap: Low energy in the afternoon : Low energy often means the liver is not doing it job. Normally the liver regulates many substances important in maintaining your body's normal state, stores nutrients including blood sugars and clears out waste products. Easy bruising or bleeding gums - The liver is partially responsible for maintaining a good level of clotting factors. Anemia and other vitamin deficiencies - The liver also stores fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K), folate, vitamin B 12 , and minerals such as copper and iron. Dark circles under the eyes and yellowish skin color - The liver is telling you it is not clearing toxins and the bilirubin from old red blood cells is turning the skin a yellowish hue. Swollen ankles - Decreased amounts of liver produced protein, albumin may lead to swelling and water retention. Difficulty digesting fats - Bile produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder is a greenish fluid need for fat digestion. High cholesterol - Cholesterol, needed for cell membrane structure, hormone balance and proper nerve conduction, is produced or processed in the liver. If the production or processing is off then cholesterol levels rise. A healthy liver keeps it all in balanced. Hot flashes and other hormonal disturbances - Yup, liver again as it plays an important role in hormonal modification and endocrine balance. Chest distention, sighing, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, diarrhea, depression, moodiness, PMS, breast tenderness, painful and/or irregular menstruation - Liver talking again. Headaches - The liver removes harmful substances and irritants from the blood, when it doesn't they can irritate the lining of the brain. Hang over - Alcohol and sugar are primarily metabolized by the liver, and accumulation of its products can lead to cell injury and liver problems. Gallbladder pain / gallstones - The gallbladder is considered in Traditional Chinese Medicine to be the pair to the liver and as you know when one partner is not doing his job the relationship suffers. Trouble sleeping between 1am and 3am - These are considered the peak hours for the liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Difficulty between 1 am and 3 am is often ascribed to an unhappy liver. Problems with the eyes, tendons, tears (dry eyes), nails - All associated with liver's acupuncture meridian which flows along the inner leg on both sides. Anger management issues - In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver, considered a wood element is associated with the emotion anger. So, what is there to do to ensure everyone is happier? If you think of vision / eyesight, liver / gallbladder health and anger forming a triangle, three connected points, each influencing the other for good or for bad. Imagine one point of the triangle is your vision, your ability to see the colors of a rainbow, recognize the face of your best friend, or read an inspirational book like, Pebbles in the Pond, Transforming the World One Person at a Time. Another point is the liver and the gallbladder, they are linked in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The liver meridian associated with the color green, runs along the inner leg. The gallbladder meridian runs along the outer edge of the leg and up into the area over the ears. Rubbing the head as in a scalp massage can stimulate the liver and gallbladder points. Pressure on liver and gallbladder points along the leg is also thought to soothe the liver. Due to the interaction between the three points of this triangle, improving the eyes with exercises, eating more essential fatty acids, such as olive oil, avocado, salmon or through acupuncture or manual therapy will also have a beneficial effect on anger management and liver / gallbladder health. You can go in another door and work on improving the liver and gallbladder by eating organic foods, and maintain a diet low in processed sugars or alcohol. There are many herbs and detoxifying foods that can help the liver and gallbladder function more efficiently. Improving liver and gallbladder health typically also improves vision and anger management skills. Going in the anger door of the triangle will also affect the other two points. Another way to increase internal communication is to rest quietly with one hand over the liver (right side of the lower rib cage) and the other hand on the area you want to connect (ie) the heart to improve blood flow and cholesterol or the spleen (left side of lower rib cage) to improve the way the liver talks to the immune system or the head to improve headache symptoms. By talking to a psychologist or life coach, doing things you love and enjoy, watching one of your favorite movies, like my favorite, The Last Holiday or writing in a journal can each improve your anger management skills. As your level of uncontrollable anger or rage decreases, your vision and liver / gallbladder health may also improve. By improving one of the three you can improve the other two. One of my favorite Japanese sayings is, "There are many ways to the top of Mount Fuji." Once you understand relationships in your body or in your life you can find the access or doorway into improving the overall system. For some people doing talk therapy or coaching for anger issues can be the easiest, fastest way to improve their life. for someone else eliminating processed sugar from their diet might be the best way to improve vision and reactivity to the world. Red Handed
Originating in Scotland in the 15th century "caught red handed" is thought to refer to people caught with blood on their hands from murder or poaching In Albanian "i kuq" or "kuqe" is the color red "flokƫkuq" is red-haired "kuqem" is to become red "kuq" is to make red while "kapem nƫ vendin e krimit" an idiom meaning to be caught red-handed literally means cling to place of crime so in Albania is neither about red or the hand "pƫr t'u kapur me dorƫ tƫ kuqe" is translated seized or caught with red hand but begs the question of whether the caught or the catcher's hand is red Exercise: What does "red handed" bring to mind for you? Does it change as you think about it?

Kenyan International Poetry, Arts and Cultural Festival and Anthology Benefit the Education of Kenyan Children The Kenyan International Poetry, Arts and Cultural Festival June 14, 2019 - June 24, 2019 in Bumala, Busia County, Western Kenya, mark the International Day of the African Child on 16th June 2019. Bumala is a small town situated in Busia County in Western Region of Kenya On 16th June 1976 in Soweto,South Africa, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of these children were shot and killed. So in 1991 the Organization of African Unity (OAU) initiated this day. Therefore every year Governments, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), International organisations and other stakeholders gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the full realization of the rights of children in Africa. Its on this basis that The Hillary Mainga Foundation has organised for the international poetry, arts and cultural festival in Kenya to raise awareness about the right of every African child to access quality education. Participants have submitted poetry that truly evoke emotions and ignite thirst for children rights advocacy. An event anthology will be done and shared with every participant. "Poetic autoethnography provides a research methodology to explore yoga as a mind-body intervention that creates sanctuary. Using this qualitative method and retrieving data from my personal journals, daily workout journals, experiences as a lesbian-identified participant in yoga classes, and yoga instructor, I turn the research lens on myself in order to examine my sociological life story. At a critical time in my life when I was struggling with the fragmentation, anxiety, and despair resulting from dealing with homophobia in a heteronormative world, yoga provided sanctuary for me. My yoga practice increased my self-efficacy, providing transferable techniques for finding refuge within myself, irrespective of the adversity I was facing in my life. Places of sanctuary are critical for members of minority groups who often face marginalization and oppression, which compromise their well-being." - Myers, K. (2017). Albert āInfiniteā Carrasco. I'm a project life philanthropist, I speak about the non ethical treatment of poor ghetto people. Why? My family was their equal, my great grandmother and great grandfather was poor, my grandmother and grandfather, my mother and father, poverty to my family was a sequel, a traditional Inheritance of the subliminal. I paid attention to the decades of regression, i tried to make change, but when I came to the fork in the road and looked at the signs that read wrong < > right, I chose the left, the wrong direction, because of street life interactions a lot around me met death or incarceration. I failed myself and others. I regret my decisions, I can't reincarnate dead men, but I can give written visions in laymens. I'm back at that fork in the road, instead of it saying wrong or right, I changed it, now it says dead men < > life. Jackie Davis Allen, otherwise known as Jacqueline D. Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. As the next eldest daughter of a coal miner father and a stay at home mother, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. Her siblings, in their own right, are accomplished, though she is the only one, to date, that has discovered the gift of writing. Graduating from Radford University, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Early Education, she taught in both public and private schools. For over a decade she taught private art classes to children both in her home and at a local Art and Framing Shop where she also sold her original soft sculptured Victorian dolls and original christening gowns. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband, taking much needed get-aways to their mountain home near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place that evokes memories of days spent growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. A lover of hats, she has worn many. Following marriage to her college sweetheart, and as wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, tutor, artist, writer, poet and crafter, she is a lover of art and antiques, surrounding herself, always, with books, seeking to learn more. In 2015 she authored Looking for Rainbows, Poetry, Prose and Art, and in 2017, Dark Side of the Moon. Both books of mostly narrative poetry were published by Inner Child Press and were edited by hulya n. yilmaz.

Eliza Segiet. After earning a Master's Degree in Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakaw, Poland, Eliza Segiet proceeded with her post-graduate studies in the fields of Cultural Knowledge, Penal Revenue and Economic Criminal Law, Arts and Literature and Film and Television Production in the Polish city, Lodz. With specific regard to her creative writings, the author describes herself as being torn in her passion for engaging in two literary genres: Poetry and Drama. A similar dichotomy from within is reflected on Segietās own words about her true nature: She likes to look at the clouds, but she keeps both of her feet set firmly on the ground. The author describes her worldview as being in harmony with that of Arthur Schopenhauer: "Ordinary people merely think how they shall 'spend' their time; a man of talent tries to 'use' it".

What if reading and writing poetry could increase our ability to perceive beauty around us as well as increase our balance, empathy and compassion..
This is what the research says about our appreciation of beauty and how it is linked with the brain.
"Chinese poetry has a long history and high esthetic value. People who engage esthetically with Chinese poetry would feel the sense of beauty naturally. However, there is little information regarding what happens in the brain when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry, and how the brain processes the subject's appreciation of beauty. Herein, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates of experiencing beauty by appreciating Chinese poetry. The participants in our study were 28 college students and the stimuli consisted of 25 Chinese poetry and 25 prose selections. Based on an event-related paradigm, the findings of this study suggested that different areas scattered in both the left and right cerebral hemispheres are activated when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry. Compared to reading prose, appreciating Chinese poetry heightens the activation of the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the bilateral insula, the left fusiform, the left supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left precentral gyrus. In these areas, the left inferior OFC and the bilateral insula are considered closely related to experiencing beauty of Chinese poetry, which have been demonstrated that it is an important neural basis of esthetic beauty when using other types of materials. The findings of this study shed new light on the complex but ordinary processes of experiencing beauty when appreciating Chinese poetry and show that some key processes underlying the feeling of esthetic beauty are shared across different esthetic domains."

At the same time, Canada is a country so large that it would seem to have room to share. Multiculturalism has, at times, almost succeeded. Diverse people have been brought together and a country of tolerance, albeit imperfectly, has evolved. Many Canadians have the perception that this is a country of peace-keepers. A former Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for his efforts in setting up the United Nations Peace-keeping forces. In 1998, Canada led the way to the signing of the Anti-Personnel Landmine Treaty. A bi-lingual, bi-cultural country has persisted with very little violence. Is Canada, as Elise Boulding in Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History (2000: 239-241) intimates, one of the āmiddle powersā that can initiate peace?"
- Linda Wilkinson, Canada, the European University Center for Peace Studies Stadstschlaining/Burg, Austria
Mir Centre for Peace, The Mir Centre for Peace builds and understands cultures of peace through learning and dialogue. Our programs and lectures make a significant new contribution to Peace Studies and Justice Studies in Canada and the world. http://selkirk.ca/mir-centre-for-peace
The Mir Centre was established in 1999 with the mandate of understanding and building cultures of peace through education.
āMir, an ancient Russian word with the complex meaning of peace, community and world, encompasses and defines the following values:
Peace and social justice for the individual, family, community and the world
Respect for cultural, ethnic, philosophical, spiritual, religious and intellectual diversity
Dignity of work and service to humanity
Education and learning which advance these values
ā
It is housed in a restored early 20th century Doukhobor communal dwelling.
The history of the Mir Centre for Peace began in 1966 when the college inherited the buildings and site, but the rich history of this magnificent piece of land and the people who have lived here, stretches back for centuries.

ā"Conveying emotions in spoken poetry may be based on a poem's semantic content and/or on emotional prosody, i.e., on acoustic features above single speech sounds. However, hypotheses of more direct sound-emotion relations in poetry, such as those based on the frequency of occurrence of certain phonemes, have not withstood empirical (re)testing. Therefore, we investigated sound-emotion associations based on prosodic features as a potential alternative route for the, at least partially, non-semantic expression and perception of emotions in poetry. We first conducted a pre-study designed to validate relevant parameters of joy- and sadness-supporting prosody in the recitation, i.e. acoustic production, of poetry. The parameters obtained thereof guided the experimental modification of recordings of German joyful and sad poems such that for each poem, three prosodic variants were constructed: one with a joy-supporting prosody, one with a sadness-supporting prosody, and a neutral variant. In the subsequent experiment, native German speakers and participants with no command of German rated the joyfulness and sadness of these three variants. This design allowed us to investigate the role of emotional prosody, operationalized in terms of sound-emotion parameters, both in combination with and dissociated from semantic access to the emotional content of the poems. The findings from our pre-study showed that the emotional content of poems (based on pre-classifications into joyful and sad) indeed predicted the prosodic features pitch and articulation rate. The subsequent perception experiment revealed that cues provided by joyful and sad prosody specifically affect non-German-speaking listeners' emotion ratings of the poems. Thus, the present investigation lends support to the hypothesis of prosody-based iconic relations between perceived emotion and sound qualia. At the same time, our findings also highlight that semantic access substantially decreases the role of cross-language sound-emotion associations and indicate that non-German-speaking participants may also use phonetic and prosodic cues other than the ones that were targeted and manipulated here."

In 2015 she authored Looking for Rainbows, Poetry, Prose and Art and in 2017, Dark Side of the Moon. Both books of mostly narrative poetry were published by Inner Child Press and were edited by hulya n. yilmaz.

Medical research indicates that learning a new language after age 50 or figuring out puzzles or singing, playing music and reading rhythmical poetry can help decrease the chances of Alzheimer's and dementia as well as improve brain plasticity and function.
This calendar is not a new language but is the language of peace or the words for peace in hundreds of different languages. It will take five years to learn or meditate on the 2000 different words for peace found here.
To learn the word for peace (one word a day) in every known language is perhaps a 20-year project but if you start with today's word it will bring you more inner peace, spread community peace and increase the sense of calm and tranquility throughout the world. Your brain health and pattern recognition skills will also benefit.
These exercises and poems are meant to decrease stress, increase conscious awareness and increase your ability to see the opportunities to grow and connect in the world around you.
