Menstruation and Poetry

Poet-In-Residence are doing all kinds of interesting projects including talk about taboo. Here is an article about poets who are talking about menstruation in India.

In an NPR story Breaking The Taboo Of Talking About Periods by Chhavi Schdev, organizers are calling for short stories, poems and verse about menstruation in a contest called Haiku. Showing that poets can lead the way on talking about anything including taboos that affect the lives of women and men everywhere.

The program was launched by a group of medical students at the Calicut Medical College in the southern state of Kerala.

Kimberly Burnham, Poet In Residence Program

How would your public image change if your organization had a poet-in-residence, like Dartmouth, New York City, Dalhousie Medical School, the Natural History Museum, Walt Whitman House, or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation? Do you have the power to make it happen?

The work I would do for your organization would include

1. Forty fresh poem written about once a week and to include the words or ideas your organization provides. These poems will be posted on my social media as well as anywhere else you want.

2. The creation of an anthology published in 2017 or early 2018 on Amazon that includes the best of the weekly poems as well as any poems provided by your employees, customers, students, or colleagues. The ebook can be provided free of charge from time to time on Amazon and print books can be sold or given out to customers keeping your name in front of the public on a regular basis.

3. Hosting an online poetry competition for your employees, customers, or colleagues. The contest winners would be published in the anthology and receives a prize of your choosing. The contest could be promoted on Amazon and other social media venues as well as through emails or letters to your customers and employees.

4. Two one hour online workshops for your guests (employees, customers, or colleagues) on topics including a) the effect of certain color, movement, and emotional words on the brain; b) value of poetry in the marketing workplace, c) how to set up an Amazon author's page once you have written your book; d) anthology; a guide to activist poetry; or e) how to create visual poetry and found poetry.

The cost of having me as your 2017 Poet in Residence is $1500 per year.
