A study notes that when we experience the beauty of poetry we experience it in specific parts of the brain, including the insula which is deep to the temporal lobe or the ear and side of the head. The insula (one on each side of the brain) is linked to consciousness, emotional health, and regulation of the body's homeostasis (balance). Functions also include compassion, empathy, perception, movement or motor control, self-awareness, cognitive (thinking) functions, and interpersonal experience.
What if reading and writing poetry could increase our ability to perceive beauty around us as well as increase our balance, empathy and compassion.. This is what the research says about our appreciation of beauty and how it is linked with the brain. "Chinese poetry has a long history and high esthetic value. People who engage esthetically with Chinese poetry would feel the sense of beauty naturally. However, there is little information regarding what happens in the brain when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry, and how the brain processes the subject's appreciation of beauty. Herein, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates of experiencing beauty by appreciating Chinese poetry. The participants in our study were 28 college students and the stimuli consisted of 25 Chinese poetry and 25 prose selections. Based on an event-related paradigm, the findings of this study suggested that different areas scattered in both the left and right cerebral hemispheres are activated when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry. Compared to reading prose, appreciating Chinese poetry heightens the activation of the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the bilateral insula, the left fusiform, the left supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left precentral gyrus. In these areas, the left inferior OFC and the bilateral insula are considered closely related to experiencing beauty of Chinese poetry, which have been demonstrated that it is an important neural basis of esthetic beauty when using other types of materials. The findings of this study shed new light on the complex but ordinary processes of experiencing beauty when appreciating Chinese poetry and show that some key processes underlying the feeling of esthetic beauty are shared across different esthetic domains." -Gao, C. and C. For over a decade she taught private art classes to children both in her home and at a local Art and Framing Shop where she also sold her original soft sculptured Victorian dolls and original christening gowns. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband, taking much needed get-aways to their mountain home near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place that evokes memories of days spent growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. A lover of hats, she has worn many. Following marriage to her college sweetheart, and as wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, tutor, artist, writer, poet and crafter, she is a lover of art and antiques, surrounding herself, always, with books, seeking to learn more. Considering medical poetry: "I feel that there’s this worry that poetry that responds to illness is always going to be depressing. Nobody likes to see someone else’s pain. It’s hard. But these poems are in some ways just so transcendent. They are inspiring in how they seek a kind of response, a kind of healing in the face of dire situations, dire health issues."

This research considers the question of whether Spoken Arabic learned in the home from Arabic speaking parents is a first language and Literary Arabic learned in school through reading and writing is a second language.
Here is what brain research had to say. "Diglossia in the Arabic language refers to the socio-linguistic situation in which Spoken Arabic (SA), which is the first to be acquired, is used for everyday communications, while Literary Arabic (LA), acquired at school for reading and writing, is also used for formal functions. Although some authors consider SA and LA as a first and second language, the question of how these are managed in the brain has not yet been understood. Using functional magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI) analysis, this study aimed at exploring the neural basis of diglossia during picture naming in two contexts. In the first, healthy young participants were instructed to name each image either in SA or LA on the basis of cue word appearing after the stimulus. In the second, they were instructed to name images either in SA or in Hebrew. Behavioral analysis showed that naming in SA was slightly easier than LA and considerably easier than Hebrew. fMRI analysis showed no difference between SA and LA. Hebrew compared to SA revealed activation differences explainable in terms of engagement of language control modules and second- to first-language effects. "The immigrants of the past were often so consumed with their own problems in settling that they did not see the problems of the peoples they were displacing. "JAMA has history of weaving the humanities in with the science of medicine. So how can reading and writing poetry help physicians and scientists in their work? "Poetry’s never going to take the place of many of our medical interventions, but surely it exists alongside of what we do in terms of the science of medicine. It helps us be better scientists. I think the best science is born of the kind of creative, out-of-the-box thinking that we see in the humanities. Those leaps of metaphoric language and metaphoric thinking—the best scientists, that’s what they do. That’s how they invent. That’s how they create new paradigms. That’s how they understand a problem, an old problem, an unsolved problem, perhaps, from a different perspective. So there’s actually much more in common between the two than we often realize. It’s a way of thinking or a habit of the mind. Some of the more practical ways poetry can help us is to be more attentive, more empathetic listeners. There are some studies that show that medical students and physicians in training who are exposed to poetry are considered by their patients as more empathetic in providing care. There are other studies that show that the attention to detail and the focus that comes with close looking, whether it’s the imagery in a poem or what we see in a painting, can help physicians be more observant and better reporters on, for instance, what a rash looks like or what the findings are on an chest x-ray. An appreciation of the arts and humanities can give us that larger human context. Rather than seeing our patient as a list of problems, we can reimagine our patient as a specific story in the context of a particular life. And we can then ask what does breast cancer, diabetes or any other condition mean in that particular person’s experience in that person’s community and in that person’s family." - Rafael Campo, MD ’92, believes in the power of imagination to make sense of suffering, to heal, if not the body, then the heart. "Rhetorical theory suggests that rhythmic and metrical features of language substantially contribute to persuading, moving, and pleasing an audience. A potential explanation of these effects is offered by "cognitive fluency theory," which stipulates that recurring patterns (e.g., meter) enhance perceptual fluency and can lead to greater aesthetic appreciation. In this article, we explore these two assertions by investigating the effects of meter and rhyme in the reception of poetry by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Participants listened to four versions of lyrical stanzas that varied in terms of meter and rhyme, and rated the stanzas for rhythmicity and aesthetic liking. The behavioral and ERP results were in accord with enhanced liking and rhythmicity ratings for metered and rhyming stanzas. The metered and rhyming stanzas elicited smaller N400/P600 ERP responses than their nonmetered, nonrhyming, or nonmetered and nonrhyming counterparts. In addition, the N400 and P600 effects for the lyrical stanzas correlated with aesthetic liking effects (metered-nonmetered), implying that modulation of the N400 and P600 has a direct bearing on the aesthetic appreciation of lyrical stanzas. Differently from other studies in the field, the association is tested between complex stimuli involving literary texts, which increases the load of the semantic factors. The stimuli were eight quatrains taken from the same poem and eight musical clips taken from a classical musical version of the poem. The experiment was conducted in two phases. This study notes that there is a relationship between the sounds of language, pitch and speed of speech and perceived emotions.
"Conveying emotions in spoken poetry may be based on a poem's semantic content and/or on emotional prosody, i.e., on acoustic features above single speech sounds. However, hypotheses of more direct sound-emotion relations in poetry, such as those based on the frequency of occurrence of certain phonemes, have not withstood empirical (re)testing. Therefore, we investigated sound-emotion associations based on prosodic features as a potential alternative route for the, at least partially, non-semantic expression and perception of emotions in poetry. We first conducted a pre-study designed to validate relevant parameters of joy- and sadness-supporting prosody in the recitation, i.e. acoustic production, of poetry. The parameters obtained thereof guided the experimental modification of recordings of German joyful and sad poems such that for each poem, three prosodic variants were constructed: one with a joy-supporting prosody, one with a sadness-supporting prosody, and a neutral variant. In the subsequent experiment, native German speakers and participants with no command of German rated the joyfulness and sadness of these three variants. This design allowed us to investigate the role of emotional prosody, operationalized in terms of sound-emotion parameters, both in combination with and dissociated from semantic access to the emotional content of the poems. The findings from our pre-study showed that the emotional content of poems (based on pre-classifications into joyful and sad) indeed predicted the prosodic features pitch and articulation rate. The subsequent perception experiment revealed that cues provided by joyful and sad prosody specifically affect non-German-speaking listeners' emotion ratings of the poems. Thus, the present investigation lends support to the hypothesis of prosody-based iconic relations between perceived emotion and sound qualia. At the same time, our findings also highlight that semantic access substantially decreases the role of cross-language sound-emotion associations and indicate that non-German-speaking participants may also use phonetic and prosodic cues other than the ones that were targeted and manipulated here." - Kraxenberger, M., W. Are you right or left or bilaterally dominant when it comes to language? We can now tell with a verb generation task and an MRI. A recent study looked at a reliable assessment of language lateralization in people with epilepsy prior to neurosurgery. "In 76 patients with epilepsy, a language lateralization index was calculated using the verb-generation fMRI task over a wide range of activation thresholds (from a permissive threshold, analyzing all brain regions, to a harsh threshold, analyzing only the strongest activations). The data were classified using a probabilistic logistic regression method. Concordant results between fMRI and Wada lateralization were observed in 89% of patients. Bilateral and right-dominant groups showed similar fMRI lateralization patterns differentiating them from the left-dominant group but still allowing classification in 82% of patients. These findings present the utility of a semi-supervised probabilistic learning approach for presurgical language-dominance mapping, which may be extended to other cognitive domains such as memory and attention." A crucial aspect of neurosurgery within or close to eloquent cortex is the preoperative identification of brain regions involved in a number of cognitive, sensory, or motor tasks. In the presurgical assessment of language, both the localization38 and lateralization28,32 of functional areas are essential for the prevention of postoperative deficits such as aphasia and dysarthria. More specifically, assessing language lateralization in patients with epilepsy is challenging and complex because of their atypical language network. Language structure among this group tends to be more variable,40 less lateralized,11 and more subject to plasticity effects21 as compared with a healthy population. Participants were asked to produce a verb that related to the nouns being presented. "Functional MRI examinations included 2 verb-generation tasks (auditory and visual), during which patients were asked to covertly generate a verb in response to various nouns being presented. The verb-generation task has been found to be reliable in prompting repeated activation of language areas in many fMRI studies10,15,45 and has been widely studied as part of a presurgical mapping protocol.35,36 Additionally, in comparison with alternative fMRI paradigms, the verb-generation task has been shown to be the task most highly correlated with Wada laterality results.36 Twenty-one common Hebrew nouns were presented in blocks of 7 nouns, with each block requiring 20–22 seconds. Each of the 7 nouns in a block was presented for 500 msec, with an interstimulus interval of 2–3 seconds. Rest periods of 20–30 seconds were provided between the blocks, and the entire test lasted 204 seconds. For the auditory task patients listened to a recording of nouns using a headset. Researchers noted, "The assumption has become that memory for words' sound patterns, or form, is rapidly lost in comparison to content. Memory for form is also assumed to be verbatim rather than schematic. Oral story-telling traditions suggest otherwise. The present experiment investigated if form can be remembered schematically in spoken poetry, a context in which form is important. We also explored if sleep could help preserve memory for form. We tested whether alliterative sound patterns could cue memory for poetry lines both immediately and after a delay of 12 hours that did or did not include sleep. Twelve alliterative poetry lines were modified into same alliteration, different alliteration, and no alliteration paraphrases. We predicted that memory for original poetry lines would be less accurate after 12 hours, same alliteration paraphrases would be falsely recognized as originals more often after 12 hours, and that the no-sleep group would make more errors. Different alliteration and no alliteration paraphrases were not expected to share this effect due to schematically different sound patterns. Our data support these hypotheses and provide evidence that memory for form is schematic in nature, retained in contexts in which form matters, and that sleep may help preserve memory for sound patterns." - Atchley, R. Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. Her siblings, in their own right, are accomplished, though she is the only one, to date, that has discovered the gift of writing. Graduating from Radford University, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Early Education, she taught in both public and private schools. For over a decade she taught private art classes to children both in her home and at a local Art and Framing Shop where she also sold her original soft sculptured Victorian dolls and original christening gowns. Poet-In-Residence Position
I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter . As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere.
