From a study on the genetic structure of circumpolar populations of Alaska, Siberia, and the Aleutian Archipelago from 1977 to present comes this research, "DNA fingerprints, and nonrecombining Y-chromosome markers, this research demonstrated the close genetic affinities among the Siberian and the Native American indigenous groups. A total of 11 inhabited islands from the Aleutian Archipelago were sampled and based on mtDNA sequences was shown to cluster tightly with Siberian Eskimo and Chukchi populations. Evidence of genetic drift through founder effect was demonstrated on Bering Island, where the D2 haplotype was fixed. Genetic discontinuity based on mtDNA was shown through SAMOVA between Kamchatkan and Aleut populations. An intimate relationship between geography and genetics through Mantel tests was observed for both Siberia and the Aleutian Islands. A 2017 study examined the relationship between personal characteristics and attendance, engagement, sleep, and mood outcomes of persons with dementia participating in group activities. "The purpose of this study is to examine which persons with dementia benefit most from group interventions. Sixty-nine persons with dementia were observed by research and therapeutic recreation staff during 10 types of group activities (reading aloud with discussion, choral-singing, baking, creative storytelling, brain games, active games, exercise, reminiscence poetry, holiday newsletter, and holiday discussions) on multiple outcomes (attendance duration, sleep, engagement, active participation, attitude, and positive mood).
Many of the personal characteristics were significantly correlated with the outcomes. Cognitive function was the most consistent predictor of all outcomes. Personal characteristics, particularly cognitive function, can predict the responses of persons with dementia during group activities." - Cohen-Mansfield, J. (2017). There is so much to learn from the way an individual, a community, or language group uses words. For example, the words for peace and war are very similar "odriyohdędaˀǫh" (war) and "odriyohsrędaˀǫh" (peace) in Cayuga, a Native American language spoken in Canada. The government is trying to preserve the language and culture but there are less than 80 fluent speakers left. Peace "Odriyohsrędaˀǫh" literally means the war has laid down or finished. A study notes that when we experience the beauty of poetry we experience it in specific parts of the brain, including the insula which is deep to the temporal lobe or the ear and side of the head. The insula (one on each side of the brain) is linked to consciousness, emotional health, and regulation of the body's homeostasis (balance). Functions also include compassion, empathy, perception, movement or motor control, self-awareness, cognitive (thinking) functions, and interpersonal experience.
What if reading and writing poetry could increase our ability to perceive beauty around us as well as increase our balance, empathy and compassion.. This is what the research says about our appreciation of beauty and how it is linked with the brain. "Chinese poetry has a long history and high esthetic value. People who engage esthetically with Chinese poetry would feel the sense of beauty naturally. However, there is little information regarding what happens in the brain when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry, and how the brain processes the subject's appreciation of beauty. Herein, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates of experiencing beauty by appreciating Chinese poetry. The participants in our study were 28 college students and the stimuli consisted of 25 Chinese poetry and 25 prose selections. Based on an event-related paradigm, the findings of this study suggested that different areas scattered in both the left and right cerebral hemispheres are activated when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry. Compared to reading prose, appreciating Chinese poetry heightens the activation of the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the bilateral insula, the left fusiform, the left supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left precentral gyrus. In these areas, the left inferior OFC and the bilateral insula are considered closely related to experiencing beauty of Chinese poetry, which have been demonstrated that it is an important neural basis of esthetic beauty when using other types of materials. The findings of this study shed new light on the complex but ordinary processes of experiencing beauty when appreciating Chinese poetry and show that some key processes underlying the feeling of esthetic beauty are shared across different esthetic domains." -Gao, C. and C. This research considers the question of whether Spoken Arabic learned in the home from Arabic speaking parents is a first language and Literary Arabic learned in school through reading and writing is a second language.
Here is what brain research had to say. "Diglossia in the Arabic language refers to the socio-linguistic situation in which Spoken Arabic (SA), which is the first to be acquired, is used for everyday communications, while Literary Arabic (LA), acquired at school for reading and writing, is also used for formal functions. Although some authors consider SA and LA as a first and second language, the question of how these are managed in the brain has not yet been understood. Using functional magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI) analysis, this study aimed at exploring the neural basis of diglossia during picture naming in two contexts. In the first, healthy young participants were instructed to name each image either in SA or LA on the basis of cue word appearing after the stimulus. In the second, they were instructed to name images either in SA or in Hebrew. Behavioral analysis showed that naming in SA was slightly easier than LA and considerably easier than Hebrew. fMRI analysis showed no difference between SA and LA. Hebrew compared to SA revealed activation differences explainable in terms of engagement of language control modules and second- to first-language effects. "It is a common experience-and well established experimentally-that music can engage us emotionally in a compelling manner. The mechanisms underlying these experiences are receiving increasing scrutiny. However, the extent to which other domains of aesthetic experience can similarly elicit strong emotions is unknown. Using psychophysiology, neuroimaging and behavioral responses, we show that recited poetry can act as a powerful stimulus for eliciting peak emotional responses, including chills and objectively measurable goosebumps that engage the primary reward circuitry. Importantly, while these responses to poetry are largely analogous to those found for music, their neural underpinnings show important differences, specifically with regard to the crucial role of the nucleus accumbens. Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. As the next eldest daughter of a coal miner father and a stay at home mother, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. Her siblings, in their own right, are accomplished, though she is the only one, to date, that has discovered the gift of writing. Graduating from Radford University, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Early Education, she taught in both public and private schools. For over a decade she taught private art classes to children both in her home and at a local Art and Framing Shop where she also sold her original soft sculptured Victorian dolls and original christening gowns. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband, taking much needed get-aways to their mountain home near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place that evokes memories of days spent growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. A lover of hats, she has worn many. Following marriage to her college sweetheart, and as wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, tutor, artist, writer, poet and crafter, she is a lover of art and antiques, surrounding herself, always, with books, seeking to learn more. In 2015 she authored Looking for Rainbows, Poetry, Prose and Art and in 2017, Dark Side of the Moon. Both books of mostly narrative poetry were published by Inner Child Press and were edited by hulya n. yilmaz. Teresa E. Gallion was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and moved to Illinois at the age of 15. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Illinois Chicago and received her master’s degree in Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She retired from New Mexico state government in 2012. She moved to New Mexico in 1987. While writing sporadically for many years, in 1998 she started reading her work in the local Albuquerque poetry community. She has been a featured reader at local coffee houses, bookstores, art galleries, museums, libraries, Outpost Performance Space, the Route 66 Festival in 2001 and the State of Oklahoma’s Poetry Festival in Cheyenne, Oklahoma in 2004. She occasionally hosts an open mic. Teresa’s work is published in numerous Journals and anthologies. She has two CDs: On the Wings of the Wind and Poems from Chasing Light. She has published three books: Walking Sacred Ground, Contemplation in the High Desert and Chasing Light. Chasing Light was a finalist in the 2013 New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards. He was born in Sarta, Palestine, in 1951. Using Light To Paint Poems Into Being
Light is a word and a symbol, a way of seeing and describing the world. Poems can incorporate the words for light and colors as if the pen is a paint brush creating an image that the readers modify for themselves, upon reading the words: light, dark, red, blue, shadow and sunlight. Light poems can describe what happens in the light and the darkness and the shadows, as well as illuminating a particular scene important to the poet. Light poems can be about physics and energy, the way the universe works and the sun shines and what the poet sees. Visual poetry can be a marriage of words and art each brightening the other. Visual poetry may also create visualizations, influencing the brain and what we think about as we read. Light is a word, a metaphor, and a way of seeing the community and opportunities around us. Foreword
"Salaøm" is the word for peace in Ge'ez, the ancient written language of the Aksum people who are the focus of this New Year's volume of The Year of The Poet. The Aksum may be unfamiliar to many readers and poets, yet they are one of the great civilizations begun so brightly, a counterpoint to the Greek and Roman worlds of the 1st century C.E. The Aksum forged a trading link between the Mediterranean and the Asiatic spheres. Aksum's rise to power began with international relationships and shifts in trade. They are a now a "lost" civilization whose descendents are African Christians, Jews, and Muslims. It is an age old story of a people who couldn't get along with their neighbors, were overrun, and pushed out into isolation. This shift set in motion the decline of their civilization. Before the common era the Aksum Queen of Sheba is said to have birthed a Solomonic dynasty that ruled Ethiopia into the modern era. In the 4th Century C.E., King Ezana declared Aksum an Orthodox Christian state and tried to find peace with the neighboring Arabs and the Jews from Aksum's Beta Israel who read scriptures and prayers in Ge’ez. And for a time, salaøm walked beside shalom. These ancient Semitic people are the ancestors of some modern Ethiopians who moved to Israel in the 1970's. Evidence of Aksum's greatness stands even today in the heart of ancient Ethiopia: monolithic obelisks, giant stelae, royal tombs, and ancient castles—proof of a powerful African state wedged between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. They commanded the ivory trade with Sudan and their fleets controlled much of the Red Sea trade. They probably thought they would always be great. But the people couldn't find peace--salaøm, salaam, shalom—in the neighborhood, couldn't find a way to co-exist and so around the 10th Century C.E. they ceased to exist—forgotten. A thousand years have passed and what have we learned of peace, international exchange and fair trade? The poets of Inner Child Press and the Poetry Posse seek to share in poetic words our lives, our glories, and challenges, always looking for a way to learn and contribute to a peacefully coexistence with our neighbors so that we can continue to thrive alongside all who walk this earth today. Searching for Peace in Aksum The first seven centuries a common era travelers and homebodies greeted each other in peace winding through Aksum where now walk the people of Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen Salaøm peace in Ge'ez the liturgical language of Aksum now gone replaced Amharic, Tigrigna, Orominga, roll off the tongues of modern peoples Nabáda, salaam, peace powerful words bring us inside the circle in Somali, Arabic, English Hetep in Egyptian Salaamata carries peace in Afar the language of present people Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti Salām in the Tigrigna of Eritrea while the Sudanese speak peace in English, salaam in Juba and Sudanese Arabic and paix in French words to thrive by all Nabáda in the Somali flows into salaam in Yemen all the places where once Aksumites prospered Ge'ez or Classical Ethiopic—"Salām" / ሰላም (peace, salutation, safety), "Salaøm" (peace)—Ethiopia, Eritrea (liturgical). Somali (som)—"Nabáda" (peace), "Nabad" (peace), “Ma nahad baa” (is there peace), “Nabadda maanka” (peace of mind), "Sulux" (peace), "Dajiyaan" (calm), "Xasilooni" (tranquility)—Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia. Egyptian—"Hetep" (peace), "Em hotep nefer weret" (very great peace, hello)—Egypt. Tigrinya (tir), Tigrigna, Tigriña—"Salām" / ሰላም (peace from Proto-Semitic šalām), "Selam" (peace, hello)—Eritrea. Juba Arabic (pga), Sudanese Creole Arabic—"Salaam" (peace), "Salaam taki" (hello, literally, your peace), "Kalaas, shukran. Maa salaam taki" (that's all, thank you, goodbye (with your peace)—Southern Sudan. Found Poems
A found poem is a poem crafted from the words of another—a quote from someone famous or words found on a scrap of paper written by someone unknown to the poet. A found poem can be teased out of the words of a friend or a colleague, occasionally a child. Sometime the words are written out in the same order as they are found, sometimes the order is changed, fine tuned, or adjusted. The words are changed, made the poet's own by what is taken and what is left behind. Choices are made and that makes all the difference. Chronic Pain, Depression and Healing
"Just over twenty years ago, I was lying in bed in so much physical pain that I begged to be allowed to kill myself. That I didn’t was in large part thanks to my love of poetry, and my mother. She would sit by my bedside in the psychiatric hospital where I had been admitted for severe depression and recite poetry aloud. Some mothers and daughters are bound by a shared love of baking; my mother and I had always been united by poetry. I was a child again, lying in bed as she read to me. Thirty-year-old, John Carroll, "found other artists were working [on blackout poetry] from books, not just newspapers. Pulling a Sharpie from his desk and a book from his bag, he set to work cannibalizing the text, obliterating all the words with black ink except for a chosen few that would survive in the form of a new poem. It was creative and destructive, and, within days, he was hooked. Within months, the “hidden messages”—the words his subconscious mind called out—had become less forlorn. Within years, the poems were downright positive. Carroll wasn’t just blacking out words with blackout poetry; he was blacking out his depression. “The daily, meditative process of searching a page for meaning gave me the opportunity to reflect,” he says. “During those hard times, I felt like if I just kept hope in my heart that tomorrow would be better, that I could persist through today. I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace."
