 Poetry can help increase confidence and emotional balance in students. A recent study noted, "Non-traditional students entering nursing programmes at university often experience difficulties with the academic literacy requirements of their courses, in particular academic and reflective writing. Levels of student anxiety may also be affected by other issues including the pressures of managing work, family and study commitments." A university based in the South East of England studied 25 Health Sciences students and found, ."the experience of writing poetry challenging at first, but ultimately rewarding. Compared with writing more formal academic reflections, many students valued the opportunity to express their emotions and experiences more freely. Analysis of the student poems also revealed a rich bank of data relating to key professional themes and students' lived experiences." This research considers the question of whether Spoken Arabic learned in the home from Arabic speaking parents is a first language and Literary Arabic learned in school through reading and writing is a second language.
Here is what brain research had to say. "Diglossia in the Arabic language refers to the socio-linguistic situation in which Spoken Arabic (SA), which is the first to be acquired, is used for everyday communications, while Literary Arabic (LA), acquired at school for reading and writing, is also used for formal functions. Although some authors consider SA and LA as a first and second language, the question of how these are managed in the brain has not yet been understood. Using functional magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI) analysis, this study aimed at exploring the neural basis of diglossia during picture naming in two contexts. In the first, healthy young participants were instructed to name each image either in SA or LA on the basis of cue word appearing after the stimulus. In the second, they were instructed to name images either in SA or in Hebrew. Behavioral analysis showed that naming in SA was slightly easier than LA and considerably easier than Hebrew. fMRI analysis showed no difference between SA and LA. Hebrew compared to SA revealed activation differences explainable in terms of engagement of language control modules and second- to first-language effects. These findings, discussed in the light of previous findings in bilingual literature, support the view that dominance in diglossia is modality-dependent." - Abou-Ghazaleh, A., A. Khateb, et al. "It is a common experience-and well established experimentally-that music can engage us emotionally in a compelling manner. The mechanisms underlying these experiences are receiving increasing scrutiny. However, the extent to which other domains of aesthetic experience can similarly elicit strong emotions is unknown. This study notes that there is a relationship between the sounds of language, pitch and speed of speech and perceived emotions.
ā"Conveying emotions in spoken poetry may be based on a poem's semantic content and/or on emotional prosody, i.e., on acoustic features above single speech sounds. However, hypotheses of more direct sound-emotion relations in poetry, such as those based on the frequency of occurrence of certain phonemes, have not withstood empirical (re)testing. Therefore, we investigated sound-emotion associations based on prosodic features as a potential alternative route for the, at least partially, non-semantic expression and perception of emotions in poetry. We first conducted a pre-study designed to validate relevant parameters of joy- and sadness-supporting prosody in the recitation, i.e. acoustic production, of poetry. The parameters obtained thereof guided the experimental modification of recordings of German joyful and sad poems such that for each poem, three prosodic variants were constructed: one with a joy-supporting prosody, one with a sadness-supporting prosody, and a neutral variant. In the subsequent experiment, native German speakers and participants with no command of German rated the joyfulness and sadness of these three variants. This design allowed us to investigate the role of emotional prosody, operationalized in terms of sound-emotion parameters, both in combination with and dissociated from semantic access to the emotional content of the poems. The findings from our pre-study showed that the emotional content of poems (based on pre-classifications into joyful and sad) indeed predicted the prosodic features pitch and articulation rate. The subsequent perception experiment revealed that cues provided by joyful and sad prosody specifically affect non-German-speaking listeners' emotion ratings of the poems. Thus, the present investigation lends support to the hypothesis of prosody-based iconic relations between perceived emotion and sound qualia. At the same time, our findings also highlight that semantic access substantially decreases the role of cross-language sound-emotion associations and indicate that non-German-speaking participants may also use phonetic and prosodic cues other than the ones that were targeted and manipulated here." - Kraxenberger, M., W. Are you right or left or bilaterally dominant when it comes to language? We can now tell with a verb generation task and an MRI. A recent study looked at a reliable assessment of language lateralization in people with epilepsy prior to neurosurgery. "In 76 patients with epilepsy, a language lateralization index was calculated using the verb-generation fMRI task over a wide range of activation thresholds (from a permissive threshold, analyzing all brain regions, to a harsh threshold, analyzing only the strongest activations). The data were classified using a probabilistic logistic regression method. Concordant results between fMRI and Wada lateralization were observed in 89% of patients. Bilateral and right-dominant groups showed similar fMRI lateralization patterns differentiating them from the left-dominant group but still allowing classification in 82% of patients. These findings present the utility of a semi-supervised probabilistic learning approach for presurgical language-dominance mapping, which may be extended to other cognitive domains such as memory and attention." A crucial aspect of neurosurgery within or close to eloquent cortex is the preoperative identification of brain regions involved in a number of cognitive, sensory, or motor tasks. In the presurgical assessment of language, both the localization38 and lateralization28,32 of functional areas are essential for the prevention of postoperative deficits such as aphasia and dysarthria. More specifically, assessing language lateralization in patients with epilepsy is challenging and complex because of their atypical language network. Language structure among this group tends to be more variable,40 less lateralized,11 and more subject to plasticity effects21 as compared with a healthy population. Participants were asked to produce a verb that related to the nouns being presented. "Functional MRI examinations included 2 verb-generation tasks (auditory and visual), during which patients were asked to covertly generate a verb in response to various nouns being presented. The verb-generation task has been found to be reliable in prompting repeated activation of language areas in many fMRI studies10,15,45 and has been widely studied as part of a presurgical mapping protocol.35,36 Additionally, in comparison with alternative fMRI paradigms, the verb-generation task has been shown to be the task most highly correlated with Wada laterality results.36 Twenty-one common Hebrew nouns were presented in blocks of 7 nouns, with each block requiring 20–22 seconds. Each of the 7 nouns in a block was presented for 500 msec, with an interstimulus interval of 2–3 seconds. Rest periods of 20–30 seconds were provided between the blocks, and the entire test lasted 204 seconds. For the auditory task patients listened to a recording of nouns using a headset. Using Light To Paint Poems Into Being
Light is a word and a symbol, a way of seeing and describing the world. Poems can incorporate the words for light and colors as if the pen is a paint brush creating an image that the readers modify for themselves, upon reading the words: light, dark, red, blue, shadow and sunlight. Light poems can describe what happens in the light and the darkness and the shadows, as well as illuminating a particular scene important to the poet. Light poems can be about physics and energy, the way the universe works and the sun shines and what the poet sees. Visual poetry can be a marriage of words and art each brightening the other. Visual poetry may also create visualizations, influencing the brain and what we think about as we read. Light is a word, a metaphor, and a way of seeing the community and opportunities around us. Memory for Form and Context We have better memory for form when form matters in writings such as poem. Researchers noted, "The assumption has become that memory for words' sound patterns, or form, is rapidly lost in comparison to content. Memory for form is also assumed to be verbatim rather than schematic. Oral story-telling traditions suggest otherwise. The present experiment investigated if form can be remembered schematically in spoken poetry, a context in which form is important. We also explored if sleep could help preserve memory for form. We tested whether alliterative sound patterns could cue memory for poetry lines both immediately and after a delay of 12 hours that did or did not include sleep. Twelve alliterative poetry lines were modified into same alliteration, different alliteration, and no alliteration paraphrases. We predicted that memory for original poetry lines would be less accurate after 12 hours, same alliteration paraphrases would be falsely recognized as originals more often after 12 hours, and that the no-sleep group would make more errors. Different alliteration and no alliteration paraphrases were not expected to share this effect due to schematically different sound patterns. Our data support these hypotheses and provide evidence that memory for form is schematic in nature, retained in contexts in which form matters, and that sleep may help preserve memory for sound patterns." - Atchley, R. Poet-In-Residence Position
I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter . As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere.
