Notes for Thursday October 24, 2024 Presentation in Portland, Oregon Motor Imagery and Proprioception 1. Visualize the location of the thalamus (about the size of a small chicken egg) in the center of the brain. There is one half in each side of the brain. Connected by the interthalamic adhesion, the thalamus sits just above the top of the brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla, spinal cord). It is slightly superior to a horizontal line going from the eyes to the back of the head. It is slightly above and forward of a horizontal line above the top of the ears from one ear to the other. 2. Visualize a movement that you want to do pain free. 3. Close your eyes, think about a movement your want to make to touch something, visualize doing it (what will move, how you will move, how you will feel), then do the motion all with your eyes closed. Were you successful in touching the exact spot you planned). 4. What is your favorite participatory sport? Do you like to play tennis, golf, or swim? Sit quietly and imagine yourself swinging successfully at a tennis ball or hitting a golf ball and watching a hole-in-one go in, or racing down the pool lane and touching the end of the pool a full stroke ahead of the competition. Imagining these things changes blood flow in the brain and the electrical flow to the muscles that would need to work in order for those activities to be done in real life. 5. Observe someone else doing an action in person or on TV. Try to imagine how the movement feels to them in as much detail as possible. 6. Close your eyes. With your fingers or toes touch an area of discomfort. Focus on the movement of the arm or leg. Visualize the fingers or toes on their path from away from the body to touching the body. Focus on each joint, including the small joints of the fingers and wrist and toes and ankle. What movements are they making? Motor Imagery and Proprioception Thalamus and Motor Imagery Motor imagery involves the mental simulation of movement without actual physical execution. The thalamus supports this process by relaying information from the motor cortex and other motor-related areas, facilitating the visualization and planning of movements. Thalamus and Proprioception Proprioception refers to the body's ability to sense its position and movement. The thalamus integrates proprioceptive information from the body and relays it to the sensory cortex. This allows for the coordination of movement and balance. “Furthermore, the sensory information derived from fasciae and its contribution to proprioception (internal “body-sense”) and musculoskeletal pain is basically unstudied. This is because, historically, more attention has been given to specialized musculoskeletal tissues (i.e., bones, cartilage, intervertebral discs, muscle) than to “non-specialized” connective tissue, including fasciae, but this is beginning to change.” ―Langevin, Helene. (2021). Fascia Mobility, Proprioception, and Myofascial Pain. Life. 11. 668. 10.3390/life11070668. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/353101538_Fascia_Mobility_Proprioception_and_Myofascial_Pain/citation/download https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/f84d/c60d389112283cbe3957baa11d19f737a59e.pdf Brain Plasticity Motor imagery improves brain plasticity or the ability to learn and do new things as well as recover and compensate for a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. “In the last decade, many studies confirmed the benefits of mental practice with motor imagery. We suggest a model of neural adaptation following mental practice, in which synapse conductivity and inhibitory mechanisms at the spinal level may also play an important role.” Neuroscience (2017) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27890831 Pain With Movement Pain with movement is common. Many people have back pain that doesn’t hurt when sitting quietly but flares up when walking or hitting a golf ball. Motor imagery is an activity that can be done while sitting quietly but activates the brain as if movement is taking place. Motor imagery improves blood flow, strengthens the connection between the brain and the muscles, and can be done completely pain-free. Motor imagery visualizations can be especially helpful for people after a brain injury, a stroke, cerebral palsy, or a movement disorder like Parkinson’s disease or Huntington’s ataxia. Recent evidence supporting the use of “action observation therapy [watching] and motor imagery practice [visualizing] for rehabilitation of Parkinson’s disease and discusses how the research on the combined use of action observation and motor imagery for motor improvements in healthy subjects may encourage the combined use of action observation therapy and motor imagery practice for therapeutic aims in Parkinson’s disease. “ Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (2017) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27865800 The thalamus is divided into several nuclei, each with specific functions: Ventral Posterior Nucleus (VPN): Involved in sensory processing (touch, pain, temperature). Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN): Relays visual information. Medial Geniculate Nucleus (MGN): Relays auditory information. Ventral Anterior/Ventral Lateral Nuclei (VA/VL): Involved in motor control. Pulvinar: Integrates sensory information and contributes to attention. Sensory Relay: The thalamus processes and transmits sensory information (except olfactory signals) to the appropriate areas of the cerebral cortex. This includes inputs from the visual, auditory, tactile, and gustatory systems. Thalamus Motor Function: It plays a role in the regulation of motor control by relaying information between the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and motor cortex. Thalamus Regulation of Consciousness: The thalamus is involved in the regulation of sleep, wakefulness, and alertness. Thalamus Emotional Responses: It participates in emotional processing by connecting with the limbic system. Focus on the Sensation and the Visualization When doing motor imagery you can focus on the sensations of touch that you would feel when tapping your fingers on a table or releasing a basketball on a perfect layup. There are certain sensations in your hands and body that you can focus on or you can focus on seeing yourself do the activity as if you are watching a movie of yourself driving a car and turn the steering wheel or dribbling a basketball. Both kinds of motor imagery are beneficial. “Motor imagery can be divided into kinesthetic and visual aspects. Corticospinal excitability increased during both kinesthetic and visual motor imagery, while excitability in Vision 1 brain area was increased only during visual motor imagery. These results imply that modulation of cortical excitability during kinesthetic and visual motor imagery is task dependent.” Neuroscience Letters (2017) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27826015 Do, Observe, and Visualize Is it better to do the activity, watch someone else do the activity, or close your eyes and visualize yourself doing the activity? A lot of research has looked at this question and the answer seems to be that each aspect doing, watching, and visualizing seem to improve the doing but in slightly different ways. One article discussed, “recent evidence supporting the use of action observation therapy [watching] and motor imagery practice [visualizing] for rehabilitation of Parkinson’s disease and discusses how the research on the combined use of action observation and motor imagery for motor improvements in healthy subjects may encourage the combined use of action observation therapy and motor imagery practice for therapeutic aims in Parkinson’s disease.” Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (2017) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27865800 Proprioception Proprioception is the sensory information that comes from muscles, tendons, and skin, which allows us to perceive our body in space. This feedback helps us control our movements more precisely and avoid accidents or injuries. Medical research links some pain responses with inadequate proprioception. Proprioception and the Brain Proprioception, the sense of the body's position and movement in space, is primarily processed by several key areas of the brain. Cranial therapies, exercises and other work on these areas of the brain can increase proprioception, which gives feedback to the brain and postural muscles about where the joints and body is in space. The more information the brain and muscles get, the better they can fine tune the motion. Treatment Ideas: Cranial Therapies for brain and nervous system function and better proprioception. Treatment for the thalamus [pain perception], parietals [body sensations], cerebellum [movement and balance] and basal ganglia [balance and coordination]. Proprioceptive signals are first processed at the level of the spinal cord and brainstem before being relayed to the thalamus. The brainstem along with the cerebellum is involved in coordinating proprioception inputs and outputs. From the thalamus, these signals are sent to the primary somatosensory cortex and other cortical areas for detailed processing. The thalamus is located deep within the brain, between the brainstem and cerebral cortex. The thalamus acts as a relay station for sensory information, including proprioceptive signals. It processes and transmits this information to the appropriate areas of the cortex for further interpretation. The primary somatosensory cortex is located in the postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe and is crucial for processing tactile information, including proprioceptive feedback. The somatosensory association cortex works in conjunction with the primary somatosensory cortex to integrate and process more complex sensory information. It receives and interprets sensory information from proprioceptors in the muscles, joints, and skin, helping the brain understand body position and movement. The cerebellum is responsible for unconscious proprioception, the cerebellum receives signals from the body and head to understand the body's position, balance, and muscle tension. The cerebellum integrates proprioceptive information with other sensory inputs to ensure accurate motor control and balance. Located at the back of the brain, beneath the occipital lobes, the cerebellum plays a critical role in coordinating movement and maintaining balance. It receives proprioceptive input from the spinal cord and other sensory systems, helping to fine-tune motor commands and adjust posture and movement accordingly. From deep within the cerebral hemispheres, the basal ganglia are involved in the coordination and regulation of movement. They receive proprioceptive input indirectly and play a role in planning and executing smooth, coordinated movements. Located near the top and back of the head, the parietal lobes process somatosensory input, including proprioception. Responsible for conscious proprioception, the somatosensory cortex processes detailed proprioceptive information. The primary somatosensory cortex and somatosensory association cortex are crucial for sensory perception, while the cerebellum and basal ganglia are key for motor coordination and adjustment based on proprioceptive input. Thalamus and Pain The thalamus processes nociceptive (pain) signals received from the body. It acts as a central hub that sends pain information to the somatosensory cortex for perception and to areas involved in emotional responses. This is why pain is not just a physical sensation but also has emotional and cognitive dimensions. Limbs in Space Our brain keeps track of where our limbs are in space. When a limb is removed areas of the brain, particularly the right inferior parietal lobe adapt, sometimes in a way that causes pain. “Event-related desynchronization of EEG in the beta band (beta-ERD) in central and parietal areas showed an angular disparity specifically in amputees with phantom limb perception, with its source localized in the right inferior parietal lobule. Our results suggest that phantom limb perception during the task is an important interferential factor for motor imagery after amputation and the interference might be related to a change of the body representation resulting from an unnatural posture of the phantom limb.” — Lyu, Y., X. Guo, et al. (2016). “Phantom limb perception interferes with motor imagery after unilateral upper-limb amputation.” Sci Rep 6: 21100. Other research indicates that the intention to move affects both healthy hands and phantom hands. “Voluntary actions are often accompanied by a conscious experience of intention. The content of this experience, and its neural basis, remain controversial. On one view, the mind just retrospectively ascribes intentions to explain the occurrence of actions that lack obvious triggering stimuli. Here, we use EEG frequency analysis of sensorimotor rhythms to investigate brain activity when a participant with congenital absence of the left hand and arm, prepared and made a voluntary action with the right or the phantom “left hand”. Our results suggest that conscious intention may depend on preparatory brain activity, and not on making, or ever having made, the corresponding physical body movement. In contrast, the results are consistent with the view that specific neural events prior to movement may generate conscious experiences of positive and negative volition.” — Walsh, E., C. Long, et al. (2015). “Voluntary control of a phantom limb.” Neuropsychologia 75: 341–348. I offer poetry writing classes for synagogues and Jewish communities via zoom. I don’t have data to back it up but in talking to people and reading online, I believe Jews are writing poetry and just writing more in the last year than ever before. Poetry is a great way to think about and process difficult situations, as well as understand what brings us joy and healing. What I am Offering A Three (75-minute) Poetry Class Series. (Pick Three Sections, Choices below with examples of poetry) Each community or synagogue can choose which three classes they would like. The suggested cost is $36 per person for the 3-class series or $395 per synagogue or community with a limit of 20 people in the class. Included in the class is the creation of an anthology of the community’s poems. The submission deadline will be one month following the last class. Each participant will be able to submit up to 10 poems for the anthology. The anthology will be available on Amazon as an eBook and paperback. Each person who participates in the anthology will become a published author / poet. Here is Kimberly Burnham's Amazon page: https://amzn.to/4eK7t0a 1. Memoir Poems with Jewish Poets Class. Memoir poems are poems that describe a moment or a feeling or an experience in the writer’s life. This class will engage in a creative writing practice that emphasizes free expression and spontaneity. The goal is to create a space where writers can connect deeply with their experiences and craft their narratives in a judgement-free and organic way. We will use the work of Jewish poets as a jumping off point and model for our poems. Each 75-minute class will explore the poems of five Jewish writers. We will read, listen, write, and then have a chance to share our poems with each other. (There are five different versions of this class featuring different poets). 2. Found Poetry from the Torah Class. Found poetry is poetry created from the words on a sheet of paper, the Torah parsha, a book, an advertisement, anything with text on it. In this class we will explore five readings (several verses) from the Torah and pick out words for our individual found poems. This can be great for B’nai Mitzvah students or someone doing an adult B’nai Mitzvah. 3. Poetry of Jewish Identity and Symbols Class. In this 75 minute class we will explore five Jewish poets who write on identity and cultural symbols, exploring what is important to us about our Jewish identity. 4. Haikus from the Torah Class. A haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry that consists of three lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. The first line has five syllables, the second has seven, and the third returns to five syllables. Haikus often capture a moment in nature, evoke emotion, or reflect on a seasonal theme. They emphasize simplicity, imagery, and depth, inviting readers to engage with the poem's essence in just a few words. We will explore five Torah parsha and create individual haikus. 5. Jewish Prayers, Praise, and Liturgical Poetry Class. In this class we will explore five texts or poems from the High Holy Day liturgy and use them as jumping off points to write our own prayers, praise poems, and song lyrics. 6. Jewish Persona Poetry Class. Persona poems are poems written by a poet from the perspective of someone else. In this class we will explore persona poems written from the perspective of a family, friends, as well as notable figures from the Torah and Jewish literature. I do consulting and give publishing help to other writers I charge $100 for an hour consultation where we set up the formatting of your book and get you started on the self-publishing journey. Here are several things to do ahead of time and then we can spend 40 minutes on zoom to finish setting up. You can share your screen and I can walk you through it. Please read through this whole list and do as much as you can ahead of time. Once you have done the "do before our call" things we can set up a call. Publishing Account Set Up 1a. DO BEFORE OUR CALL: Go to https://kdpreports.amazon.com and set up your account (just open it nothing more unless you want to look around. All you need to do is enter your email and password for Amazon. It is the same one you use to buy things on Amazon (all Amazon related accounts - see below also use the same email and password combination. They will probably send you an email that you have to confirm that it is you but it is pretty straightforward. This is your publishing account. 1b. ON OUR CALL: We will set up how you get paid. Make sure you have the bank account number where you want your royalties deposited. Make sure you have your social Security Number or whatever number the US government needs to know about taxes. TITLE and ISBN 2a. DB: Make sure you know the exact title and subtitle you want. Think about your ISBN number and what you want. Do you have the one from a store or program?, Do you want to use Amazon's free one? Do you want to use another one. This has to be decided before our call. Message me if there are any questions. The advantage of using your own (paid for or from a publishing house) ISBN number is that you can go on to publish on other platforms but that is only an advantage if you think you will. Otherwise the free one is good. 2b. OOC: we need this number to proceed. Once the title has been associated with an ISBN number it CAN NOT be changed. KEY WORDS 3a. DB: Think about what key words and 3 book categories you want your book in. 3b. Add keywords and book categories. BASIC BOOK FORMATTING 4a. DO BEFORE: Formating the book. Decide what size you want your book to be. 9x6 is a common size. Look at your bookshelf and see what you like and what you want. The advantage of using a standard size (there are 10-15 standard sizes) is what markets your book can go into. Meaning if you have an odd custom size you will not have as big a market place. 4b. ON OUR CALL or BEFORE: Format your book in WORD to the size you want it. The page size is the finished size with .8-1 inch margins., full justification and a2-3 space tab for indenting paragraphs. If you can do the table of contents, page numbers, etc before our call that is great otherwise I can walk you through it. BASIC COVER DESIGN 5a. DB: Cover design - decide what you want on the cover have any good quality photos you plan to use in jpg format or if you or someone else has designed the cover have the front cover in jpg format and the entire cover in a PDF file. In order to do the pdf file you need to know the book size. We can play with this as we go and you can make changes and adjustments in the future. Decide what you want on the back cover (back cover copy) and what colors you want. 5b. OOC Cover: design the cover in the account with Amazon's software. This can be a mock up that can be changed in the future. PDF BOOK FILES for PRINT BOOK 6. OOC: Upload the pdf book file for the print book and look through it on Amazon's program, which is very cool. Download the proof copy for the print book. (Do you know how to make a pdf from a WORD document? We will do this before uploading. WORD FILES for eBook 7. OOC: Upload the WORD book file for the eBook and look through it on Amazon's program. It is like reading it on a kindle device. ADUSTMENTS 8. OOC: make any changes and adjustments that we need and make sure you know how to make changes and adjustments. It is unlikely that everything will go smoothly but this is the process. I hope by the end of the 40 minutes that you will know everything you need. PRICE 9a. DB: Price: decide what price you want your book to be. Amazon will tell us what the lowest price can be. you decide the retail price. Amazon will tell you how much it costs to print and what your royalties per book will be. eBook should be between $2.99 - $9.99 Look at comparables for ideas. PROOF COPY 9b. OOC: we can order a proof copy of the print book. (Again this always takes longer but under ideal circumstances we may be able to do this. This cost of the printed proof copy (which looks just like the regular final book but with a line across it that says not for resale) should cost $5-10 that you can buy through your Amazon account. (This is the only cost in the entire process.) AUTHOR'S PAGE
10. Once the ebook or print book or if you are already published in another book, you can set up your author's page at https://author.amazon.com Look at and follow my page at https://amzn.to/49R671e Think about what pictures, bio information etc that you want to put on your author's page. (This is also free of charge.) REVIEWER'S PROFILE 11. Also you can see my buyer / review profile here and make sure your own is set up with the title of your book and bio. This makes it so everytime you review a book or product your name and book title shows up on the review. https://amzn.to/3VfE6fh This you can do anytime because anyone who buys and reviews things on Amazon can do this. 12. Anyone can also set up an affiliate account where when someone buys a book from your link on social media or your website, etc. you get a tiny commision. https://affiliate-program.amazon.com MARKETING 13. Have different size bios and blurbs about the book with a link to Amazon. 14. Consider a free eBook day to publicize on social media. 15. Consider book blogs where bloggers or podcasters do book reviews and or interviews with the author. Write out 5-10 questions that you would like to answer about your book, book writing process or reading. Write out the questions and answers. 16. Talk to your local library, used bookstores and new bookstores about whether they carry or have a local authors section. Peace Can Be A Flower by Kimberly Burnham
(after Patrick Ramsay) Peace can be a flower nurtured and grown from a tiny seed sprouting for any chance, any opening a blue sea holly with thorns and beauty, a white and yellow daisy blooming in the mid summer, a rare orchid fragile and exquisite, or a Jerusalem artichoke unaptly named waiting till all hope has been given up then blooming and turning its head to the late fall sun All are trying to gather the light and water nourishing themselves from a patch of earth before the winter snow comes or the burning heat, both extremes will destroy Peace doesn't care who is watching as it shows it's beautiful and colors for everyone not just you or me, it doesn't care if we like each other or suspect what the bees know of peace as they gather pollen storing it away for a day without Peace can show up wedged between two rocks, in a crack in the sidewalk, or hidden under rubble, on a mountain top carried there by an eagle or a vulture, found in stillness and in a pride parade It must be sought out and recognized like a flower that some would say is a weed Using the jump off line, “Grief can show up …,” from Grief Can Be a Flower by Patrick Ramsey. Eliza Segiet (Poland) Eliza Segiet graduated with a Master's Degree in Philosophy at Jagiellonian University., Laureate Naji Naaman Literary Prize 2020, International Award Paragon of Hope (2020), Finalist Golden Aster Book World Literary Prize 2020, Mili Dueli 2022. New Day’s Peace A new start put on yesterday's clothes make sure there are food options for the kids and they can get to school then make time for yourself to really start the day a new a hot shower with peppermint shampoo filling the bathroom with minty steam a cup of fresh tea a walk outside to gather the mint leaves do one tidying project in the garage one day it will be fully organized ignore anything but this one short project you choose to do it won't all get done today that is okay it is where you are in this process shedding the years of accumulation Sit down at the computer delete emails for spam or even amazing programs that if you had time you would do but you can't do everything so thin out the demands for your attention find that one prompt that one thing you want to jump off from to write the feelings allowing them to bubble up the key to starting fresh to going into the day in a new way get rid of stuff and emotions binding you to the past let go of the pain remind yourself of the joy let the memories flow unencumbered by fears you have carried too long tuck this joy back on the shelf in a corner of your mind where it will be when you need it backing you up freeing you and walk into the rest of this new day Wild Writing May 29, 2024 using the jump off line, “How to start over or how to be where you are…,” from How to Start Over by Maya Stein Kimberly Burnham is an award winning poet, member of the Wild Writing Family, Inner Child Press Poetry Posse, and published in many books and poetry anthologies. Poets and Contributors Forward by Kimberly Burnham Being Human doesn’t feel as easy a task as it use to be in this world of ours. Being Human, what does it mean? Does it mean inhabiting a body, a physical body that interacts with other humans? Does it mean the heart that beats within us and what we feel and believe in our hearts? Does our humanity reside in our heart, liver, brain or in our hands as we reach out to one another trying to understand and communicate. Is it the way we treat our children and the children of those we call others? Is part of being human that we take a positive view of the world around us or that we see the pain and suffering and try to do something about it or is it something in between? Human being, is it a responsibility to act in a certain way, feel in a certain way, or can we decide how we feel and what we believe? Is it an honor, a right or something else? Does humanity depend on gender, nationality, culture, or age? What brings our humanity to the forefront? It turns out that reading through the selection of poems in this anthology, Being Human .a poetic plea for humanity, one realizes how differently poets interpret this call for poetry and expression. We each see being human as a mix of physical actions, thoughts, and feelings. At Inner Child Press, we hope that this volume of poetry brings comfort and hope as well as spurring each of us to action to make the world an easier and better place to be human. Poet-In-Residence Position
I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter . As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere. Each poem would link back to your site where the word or language appeared. I would expect some sort of stipend and a six month to one year placement. Please contact me for details if your organization is interested in having a poet-in-residence to help get your message out. [email protected] Buy the print or eBook, review Awakenings then contact Kimberly for a free 20 minute brain health consultation. Email or Phone
(Regular rates $120 per hour or 10 sessions for $650.) (Integrative Medicine)
