"Nature is inspiring by habit — spontaneous not rehearsed, sometimes demure, sometimes pretentious," said award-winning photographer, Faith Bemiss, of Sedalia. "I often find that it provides enough poetry, music, drama and soul-healing to last many lifetimes — being able to capture this art with my camera is, without question, a quest I feel I was born with."  http://www.newstribune.com/news/features/story/2019/jun/02/header-on-displayheadline-meet-award-winning-photographer-faith-bemiss/781287/
The Poetry Posse 2019 Kimberly Burnham has lived in tropical Bogota, Colombia; in Brussels, Belgium during the Vietnam War, in Japan teaching buisnessmen English, in the diverse and international Toronto, Ontaria and a number of places in the US. She currently lives in Spokane, Washington. Her recent book, Awakenings: Peace Dictionary, Language and the Mind, a Daily Brain Health Program includes the word for peace in hundreds of languages. Her work can be found in 50 plus volumes of The Year of the Poet, Inspired by Gandhi, Women Building the World, Poetry24 The News is the Muse, Tifferet Journal, among others. The Poetry Posse 2019 The Year of the Poet project was the brain-child of Jamie Bond and William S. Peters, Sr. The original vision was to commit themselves to writing and publishing a book a month for the year of 2014. In further discussion the vision expanded to include the other Gifted & Talented Writers you see below. The objective is to bring the Poetry Community together with the various cross demographic representations found in Gender, Religion, Geography, Culture and Ethnicity. We hope you enjoy the myriad of perspectives represented here. Thank You, Inner Child Press International. Gail Weston Shazor. This is a creative promise ~ my pen will speak to and for the world. Jackie Davis Allen, otherwise known as Jacqueline D. Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. As the next eldest daughter of a coal miner father and a stay at home mother, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. Her siblings, in their own right, are accomplished, though she is the only one, to date, that has discovered the gift of writing. Graduating from Radford University, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Early Education, she taught in both public and private schools. For over a decade she taught private art classes to children both in her home and at a local Art and Framing Shop where she also sold her original soft sculptured Victorian dolls and original christening gowns. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband, taking much needed get-aways to their mountain home near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place that evokes memories of days spent growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. A lover of hats, she has worn many. Following marriage to her college sweetheart, and as wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, tutor, artist, writer, poet and crafter, she is a lover of art and antiques, surrounding herself, always, with books, seeking to learn more. In 2015 she authored Looking for Rainbows, Poetry, Prose and Art, and in 2017, Dark Side of the Moon. Both books of mostly narrative poetry were published by Inner Child Press and were edited by hulya n. yilmaz.

Eliza Segiet. After earning a Master's Degree in Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakaw, Poland, Eliza Segiet proceeded with her post-graduate studies in the fields of Cultural Knowledge, Penal Revenue and Economic Criminal Law, Arts and Literature and Film and Television Production in the Polish city, Lodz. With specific regard to her creative writings, the author describes herself as being torn in her passion for engaging in two literary genres: Poetry and Drama. A similar dichotomy from within is reflected on Segiet’s own words about her true nature: She likes to look at the clouds, but she keeps both of her feet set firmly on the ground. The author describes her worldview as being in harmony with that of Arthur Schopenhauer: "Ordinary people merely think how they shall 'spend' their time; a man of talent tries to 'use' it".

William S. Peters, Sr. Bill’s writing career spans a period of over 50 years. Being first Published in 1972, Bill has since went on to Author in excess of 40 additional Volumes of Poetry, Short Stories, etc., expressing his thoughts on matters of the Heart, Spirit, Consciousness and Humanity. His primary focus is that of Love, Peace and Understanding! Bill says . . . I have always likened Life to that of a Garden. So, for me, Life is simply about the Seeds we Sow and Nourish. All things we “Think and Do”, will “Be” Cause and eventually manifest itself to being an “Effect” within our own personal “Existences” and “Experiences” . . . whether it be Fruit, Flowers, Weeds or Barren Landscapes! Bill highly regards the Fruits of his Labor and wishes that everyone would thus go on to plant “Lovely” Seeds on “Good Ground” in their own Gardens of Life! to connect with Bill, he is all things Inner Child www.iaminnerchild.com Personal Web Site www.iamjustbill.com

Relationship Between Alaska and Siberian Populations - Genes, Language and Poetry

From a study on the genetic structure of circumpolar populations of Alaska, Siberia, and the Aleutian Archipelago from 1977 to present comes this research, "DNA fingerprints, and nonrecombining Y-chromosome markers, this research demonstrated the close genetic affinities among the Siberian and the Native American indigenous groups.  A total of 11 inhabited islands from the Aleutian Archipelago were sampled and based on mtDNA sequences was shown to cluster tightly with Siberian Eskimo and Chukchi populations. Evidence of genetic drift through founder effect was demonstrated on Bering Island, where the D2 haplotype was fixed. Genetic discontinuity based on mtDNA was shown through SAMOVA between Kamchatkan and Aleut populations. An intimate relationship between geography and genetics through Mantel tests was observed for both Siberia and the Aleutian Islands. The genetic structure of the populations of the Aleutian Archipelago most closely approximates the isolation-by-distance model." - Crawford, M. H. (2007). "Genetic structure of circumpolar populations: a synthesis." Am J Hum Biol 19(2): 203-217.

The Poetry Posse 2019
The Year of the Poet project was the brain-child of Jamie Bond and William S.

Albert ‘Infinite’ Carrasco. I'm a project life philanthropist, I speak about the non ethical treatment of poor ghetto people. Why? My family was their equal, my great grandmother and great grandfather was poor, my grandmother and grandfather, my mother and father, poverty to my family was a sequel, a traditional Inheritance of the subliminal. I paid attention to the decades of regression, i tried to make change, but when I came to the fork in the road and looked at the signs that read wrong < > right, I chose the left, the wrong direction, because of street life interactions a lot around me met death or incarceration. I failed myself and others. I regret my decisions, I can't reincarnate dead men, but I can give written visions in laymens. I'm back at that fork in the road, instead of it saying wrong or right, I changed it, now it says dead men < > life.

Reminiscence Poetry, Cognition and Dementia

4/1/2019

A 2017 study examined the relationship between personal characteristics and attendance, engagement, sleep, and mood outcomes of persons with dementia participating in group activities. "The purpose of this study is to examine which persons with dementia benefit most from group interventions. Sixty-nine persons with dementia were observed by research and therapeutic recreation staff during 10 types of group activities (reading aloud with discussion, choral-singing, baking, creative storytelling, brain games, active games, exercise, reminiscence poetry, holiday newsletter, and holiday discussions) on multiple outcomes (attendance duration, sleep, engagement, active participation, attitude, and positive mood).

Many of the personal characteristics were significantly correlated with the outcomes. Cognitive function was the most consistent predictor of all outcomes. Personal characteristics, particularly cognitive function, can predict the responses of persons with dementia during group activities."

- Cohen-Mansfield, J. (2017). "Activity groups for persons with dementia: Personal predictors of participation, engagement and mood." Psychiatry Res 257: 375-380.

The author describes her worldview as being in harmony with that of Arthur Schopenhauer: "Ordinary people merely think how they shall 'spend' their time; a man of talent tries to 'use' it".

Kenyan International Poetry, Arts and Cultural Festival and Anthology Benefit the Education of Kenyan Children

The Kenyan International Poetry, Arts and Cultural Festival June 14, 2019 - June 24, 2019 in Bumala, Busia County, Western Kenya, mark the International Day of the African Child on  16th June 2019. Bumala is a small town situated in Busia County in Western Region of Kenya

On 16th June 1976 in Soweto,South Africa, about ten thousand black school children marched in a column more than half a mile long protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of these children were shot and killed. So in 1991 the Organization of African Unity (OAU) initiated this day. Therefore every year Governments, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), International organisations and other stakeholders gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the full realization of the rights of children in Africa.

Its on this basis that The Hillary Mainga Foundation has organised for the international poetry, arts and cultural festival in Kenya to raise awareness about the right of every African child to access quality education. Participants have submitted poetry that truly evoke emotions and ignite thirst for children rights advocacy. An event anthology will be done and shared with every participant.

Climate Change Driven Compentition on Lake Turkana

In Swahili "amani" means peace
security and safety in Swahili
but at Lake Turkana
there is no "amani"
no "akimaima" which means to soothe
to appease or pacify in the local language of Turkana
to cause to calm down
but how do we calm down climate change
droughts that kills the cattle
I must seek out alternatives
even illegal sources of income
withstand conflict between the newcomers and those here first
I have no choice
I must feed my family here in northern Kenya
with a rivalry between Kenyan tribes and Ethiopian fisherfolk
everywhere is the other side of the my lake
where peace is called "selami" in Amharic
but there is no "selami" here at the border
between the two nations

We are an international group of poets from countries like the United States, Canada, Polands, Turkey, China, Jordan, India, Lebanon and more. We are starting on our sixth year as a collective publishing a book of poetry every month for the last 60 months. We are also diverse in our religious affiliations and practices. Each year there is a cover theme. There have been flowers, trees, gems and birds. Last year, we focus each monthly volume on a society and culture including Maori (December), Highlands Scots, Nez Perce, Oceania, Northern Africa and more.

We feel that our poetry creates understanding, improved relationships and international cooperation.

We would like to focus our poetry this year on indigenous languages, growing awareness of the value of linguistic and cultural diversity, learning from those who are different and appreciating our similarities.

The Inner Child Poetry Posse writes a volume of The Year of The Poet each month with different themes and would like to designate the indigenous languages as the theme for 2019 William S. Experience the Beauty of Poetry in the Brain

12/1/2018

A study notes that when we experience the beauty of poetry we experience it in specific parts of the brain, including the insula which is deep to the temporal lobe or the ear and side of the head. The insula (one on each side of the brain) is linked to consciousness, emotional health, and regulation of the body's homeostasis (balance). Functions also include compassion, empathy, perception, movement or motor control, self-awareness, cognitive (thinking) functions, and interpersonal experience.

What if reading and writing poetry could increase our ability to perceive beauty around us as well as increase our balance, empathy and compassion..

This is what the research says about our appreciation of beauty and how it is linked with the brain.

"Chinese poetry has a long history and high esthetic value. People who engage esthetically with Chinese poetry would feel the sense of beauty naturally. However, there is little information regarding what happens in the brain when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry, and how the brain processes the subject's appreciation of beauty. Herein, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates of experiencing beauty by appreciating Chinese poetry. The participants in our study were 28 college students and the stimuli consisted of 25 Chinese poetry and 25 prose selections. Based on an event-related paradigm, the findings of this study suggested that different areas scattered in both the left and right cerebral hemispheres are activated when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry. Compared to reading prose, appreciating Chinese poetry heightens the activation of the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the bilateral insula, the left fusiform, the left supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left precentral gyrus. In these areas, the left inferior OFC and the bilateral insula are considered closely related to experiencing beauty of Chinese poetry, which have been demonstrated that it is an important neural basis of esthetic beauty when using other types of materials. The findings of this study shed new light on the complex but ordinary processes of experiencing beauty when appreciating Chinese poetry and show that some key processes underlying the feeling of esthetic beauty are shared across different esthetic domains."

Go beŋ 和平 in Old Chinese (China)
"Breŋ" or "Bhreŋ" (be level, even, just, peaceful), [*[ɢ]ˤoj  breŋ] or [*ɡoːl  beŋ] (和平) in Old Chinese.

Level Chinese Peace

In Old Chinese
ancient words of peace
"bhreŋ" is also level
even and just
as if there can be peace if things are even and fair
a negotiation table that is level
and with 穩 "wǝ̄́n"
peace is fast and stable
different than even and level but still
a sense of security
as well as 晏 "rānh" or "yàn"
bright, pleasant and mild
as if mild-mannered bright and pleasant people
have peace quickly follow them

Jackie Davis Allen, otherwise known as Jacqueline D. Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. A lover of hats, she has worn many. Following marriage to her college sweetheart, and as wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, tutor, artist, writer, poet and crafter, she is a lover of art and antiques, surrounding herself, always, with books, seeking to learn more. Poetry and the Power of Imagination to Heal

11/1/2018

Considering medical poetry:  "I feel that there’s this worry that poetry that responds to illness is always going to be depressing. Nobody likes to see someone else’s pain. It’s hard. But these poems are in some ways just so transcendent. They are inspiring in how they seek a kind of response, a kind of healing in the face of dire situations, dire health issues."

"Another thing I see, which is gratifying, is that doctors are, in a way, rediscovering what called them to medicine in the first place through these poems, and again, those basic gestures of empathy, of compassion, of really hearing another’s voice, someone who perhaps doesn’t have a voice in the larger culture. I see poems that are very moving and, I think, potentially life changing for the poets and for those who read the poems."

-Rafael Campo, MD ’92, believes in the power of imagination to make sense of suffering, to heal, if not the body, then the heart. As a physician, he has been dedicated to this idea for nearly 25 years. As a poet, though, Campo’s been writing to heal for a good deal longer. His dual approach has been newly recognized: On Jan. 1, he became editor of JAMA’s Poetry and Medicine section.

Cognitive Fluency, Recurring patterns and Beauty - The Brain on Poetry

7/1/2018

This study indicates how poetry can persuade, move and please people. Think about how you feel when you read poetry.

"Rhetorical theory suggests that rhythmic and metrical features of language substantially contribute to persuading, moving, and pleasing an audience. A potential explanation of these effects is offered by "cognitive fluency theory," which stipulates that recurring patterns (e.g., meter) enhance perceptual fluency and can lead to greater aesthetic appreciation. In this article, we explore these two assertions by investigating the effects of meter and rhyme in the reception of poetry by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Participants listened to four versions of lyrical stanzas that varied in terms of meter and rhyme, and rated the stanzas for rhythmicity and aesthetic liking. The behavioral and ERP results were in accord with enhanced liking and rhythmicity ratings for metered and rhyming stanzas. The metered and rhyming stanzas elicited smaller N400/P600 ERP responses than their nonmetered, nonrhyming, or nonmetered and nonrhyming counterparts. In addition, the N400 and P600 effects for the lyrical stanzas correlated with aesthetic liking effects (metered-nonmetered), implying that modulation of the N400 and P600 has a direct bearing on the aesthetic appreciation of lyrical stanzas. We suggest that these effects are indicative of perceptual-fluency-enhanced aesthetic liking, as postulated by cognitive fluency theory."

- Obermeier, C., S. A. Kotz, et al. (2016). "Aesthetic appreciation of poetry correlates with ease of processing in event-related potentials." Cogn Affect Behav Neurosci 16(2): 362-373.

In other words we like things or people better when we receive information fluently and rhythmically.

In 2015 she authored Looking for Rainbows, Poetry, Prose and Art and in 2017, Dark Side of the Moon. Both books of mostly narrative poetry were published by Inner Child Press and were edited by hulya n. yilmaz.

While Similar Music and Poetry Show Subtle Differences in the Brain

"It is a common experience-and well established experimentally-that music can engage us emotionally in a compelling manner. The mechanisms underlying these experiences are receiving increasing scrutiny. However, the extent to which other domains of aesthetic experience can similarly elicit strong emotions is unknown. Using psychophysiology, neuroimaging and behavioral responses, we show that recited poetry can act as a powerful stimulus for eliciting peak emotional responses, including chills and objectively measurable goosebumps that engage the primary reward circuitry. Importantly, while these responses to poetry are largely analogous to those found for music, their neural underpinnings show important differences, specifically with regard to the crucial role of the nucleus accumbens. We also go beyond replicating previous music-related studies by showing that peak aesthetic pleasure can co-occur with physiological markers of negative affect. Finally, the distribution of chills across the trajectory of poems provides insight into compositional principles of poetry."

The Poetry Posse 2018
The Year of the Poet project was the brain-child of Jamie Bond and William S.

February 2018 The Year of the Poet Featuring 3 Poems by Kimberly Burnham

Using Light To Paint Poems Into Being

Light is a word and a symbol, a way of seeing and describing the world. Poems can incorporate the words for light and colors as if the pen is a paint brush creating an image that the readers modify for themselves, upon reading the words: light, dark, red, blue, shadow and sunlight. Light poems can describe what happens in the light and the darkness and the shadows, as well as illuminating a particular scene important to the poet. Light poems can be about physics and energy, the way the universe works and the sun shines and what the poet sees. Visual poetry can be a marriage of words and art each brightening the other. Visual poetry may also create visualizations, influencing the brain and what we think about as we read. Light is a word, a metaphor, and a way of seeing the community and opportunities around us.

Except from The Year of The Poet February 2018

Kinzeraba, The Holy Treasure

Observe a kernel of light
in darkness learn
goodness discovered within evil
live until death
fully ever
a role for human beings
in cosmic explosions

Growth in the world
two branches of olive
meeting across
four sides of the universe
draped in pure shimmering silk
the book of life
first to last pages flutter full

Great blessings rise up
all colors streaming
from light and water
comes expansive
life

Light

Switching on at work
darkest day just beginning
power gratitude

Paws & Hooves

Together paws and hooves
pounding
the frozen landscape
wearing a path
where they sprint
like a pack of wild ones

Two sleep inside
slumbering on the carpet
near the bed

Two rest outside
laying snuggly together
in a small barn

Meeting in the daylight to dash
and dart paws and hooves
thundering

Year of the Poet Jan 2018 Book - 3 Peace Poems by Kimberly Burnham

Foreword

"Salaøm" is the word for peace in Ge'ez, the ancient written language of the Aksum people who are the focus of this New Year's volume of The Year of The Poet. The Aksum may be unfamiliar to many readers and poets, yet they are one of the great civilizations begun so brightly, a counterpoint to the Greek and Roman worlds of the 1st century C.E. The Aksum forged a trading link between the Mediterranean and the Asiatic spheres. Aksum's rise to power began with international relationships and shifts in trade.
They are a now a "lost" civilization whose descendents are African Christians, Jews, and Muslims. It is an age old story of a people who couldn't get along with their neighbors, were overrun, and pushed out into isolation. This shift set in motion the decline of their civilization.
Before the common era the Aksum Queen of Sheba is said to have birthed a Solomonic dynasty that ruled Ethiopia into the modern era. In the 4th Century C.E., King Ezana declared Aksum an Orthodox Christian state and tried to find peace with the neighboring Arabs and the Jews from Aksum's Beta Israel who read scriptures and prayers in Ge’ez. And for a time, salaøm walked beside shalom. These ancient Semitic people are the ancestors of some modern Ethiopians who moved to Israel in the 1970's.
Evidence of Aksum's greatness stands even today in the heart of ancient Ethiopia: monolithic obelisks, giant stelae, royal tombs, and ancient castles—proof of a powerful African state wedged between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. They commanded the ivory trade with Sudan and their fleets controlled much of the Red Sea trade. They probably thought they would always be great.
But the people couldn't find peace--salaøm, salaam, shalom—in the neighborhood, couldn't find a way to co-exist and so around the 10th Century C.E. they ceased to exist—forgotten. A thousand years have passed and what have we learned of peace, international exchange and fair trade?
The poets of Inner Child Press and the Poetry Posse seek to share in poetic words our lives, our glories, and challenges, always looking for a way to learn and contribute to a  peacefully coexistence with our neighbors so that we can continue to thrive alongside all who walk this earth today.

Longing for Home

Deeply embedded in the human psyche
a longing for home
an innate hunger
buried deep in memories
a yearning for the best of what has been
the anticipation of what can
be desire for home
we remember
craving the landscape of dreams

More than a yearning for place
a pleasant memory or a dreamed of future
home is a state of being
of belonging
becoming strong
the deep need to be anchored
secure a restored past
drawn towards

    Poet-In-Residence Position
I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter .
As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere. Each poem would link back to your site where the word or language appeared.
I would expect some sort of stipend and a six month to one year placement. Please contact me for details if your organization is interested in having a poet-in-residence to help get your message out. Nervewhisperer@gmial.com

Medical research indicates that learning a new language after age 50 or figuring out puzzles or singing, playing music and reading rhythmical poetry can help decrease the chances of Alzheimer's and dementia as well as improve brain plasticity and function.

This calendar is not a new language but is the language of peace or the words for peace in hundreds of different languages. It will take five years to learn or meditate on the 2000 different words for peace found here.

To learn the word for peace (one word a day) in every known language is perhaps a 20-year project but if you start with today's word it will bring you more inner peace, spread community peace and increase the sense of calm and tranquility throughout the world. Your brain health and pattern recognition skills will also benefit.

These exercises and poems are meant to decrease stress, increase conscious awareness and increase your ability to see the opportunities to grow and connect in the world around you.
