There are some interesting organizational dynamics based on our brain and nervous system function that are currently being applied by David Rock and his coaching staff to work environments and businesses. It can also be applied with positive outcomes to your physical health and eyesight.
David Rock has written several fascinating books on how our brains either support us to think clearly and have insights or work against our decision making process. He has developed the field of Neuroleadership, an emerging field of study focused on bringing neuroscientific knowledge into the areas of leadership development, management training, change management, education, consulting and coaching. While David Rock doesn't apply his work to physical health. Many of his ideas on interpersonal relationships and productivity can be applied to the community of cells that contribute to your health. For example, used by David Rock at the Neuroleadership Institute, The SCARF model involves five domains of human social experience: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness & Respect, and Fairness. āThink about an area of your body, which you wish functioned better, was more productive, more efficient, or which supported you to be better able to accomplish your purpose in life. āNow consider these questions. You don't need to find all the answers completely for this exercise to have benefit. Just asking the question can have a positive impact because if directs your attention to the areas and through biofeedback mechanisms can improve blood flow and nervous system connection to the area. You can also put one of your hands on the area to further draw your attention to it. Fill in the blank........ What is the status of ______________ in my body as a whole? What can be done to increase the status or how that area feels? For example, What is the status of the liver in my body? Consider for a moment what is status in a physical sense. Someone with higher status often has more resources available. So consider what does the liver need in terms of resources. One thing is blood flow carrying nutrient, especially proteins. So eating better quality protein can increase the status of the liver. Also in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is associated with anger issues. So finding ways to address anger in productive ways increases the status of the liver. Both of these things also increase over all health in the body. In acupuncture the liver meridian, an energetic flow of information, is associated with the eyes and eye health. Is your vision for your business and life being filtered through an angry liver or one with high status? How does certainty or uncertainty in my life affect ___? For example, how does certainty in my life affect my knees? One way to increase certainty for your knees is to always walk on even, level surfaces. That way your knees and legs can be more certain about how they should move and balance. A surprise, an unexpected curb or crack in the sidewalk can throw your balance off and cause a fall. On the other hand a life with no variability is well ..... boring. A different way to increase certainty is to increase the amount of incoming information on which our balance is predicated. If my eyes are good and I can see the curb, then my knees will know how to deal with it, how to adapts or adjust so that my walking is smooth. Wearing shoes that are comfortable and also allow for more information to travel from the point of contact with the ground up to my brain and balance centers also allows me to adjust appropriately as I walk into a hotel ballroom to talk about the importance of vision. Can ______________ do its job in my body in an autonomous way and is it properly supported? For example, Can the lungs do their job in an autonomous way? Obviously, the lungs are surrounded by the rib cage and the neck and shoulder above and the diaphragm below. Compression from any of these areas makes it harder for the lungs to do their job. Also if the liver is adhered (due to trauma or inflammation) to the diaphragm, then every time the diaphragm contracts and relaxes it has to drag the liver along for the ride. Hands-on Myofascial Release by a massage therapists or physical therapist to release restrictions can ensure the autonomy of the lungs. Breathing exercises can also help support lung function as can dealing with the emotions of grief and sadness, often associated in acupuncture with the lungs. How is ______________ related to its neighbors, blood flow in the body, or nutrient flow through the physical self? For example, How is the sacrum related to its neighbors, which include the lumbar spine, hips, colon, uterus / prostate, bladder, etc? Our center of gravity is at the sacrum. It is also the end of the digestive system and the renal (kidney & bladder) system and intimately involved with our reproductive system. The sacrum is the interface between the spine and the legs and between the right and left side of the body. Consider how exercise, eating with intention, or healthy sexual relationships can improve the relationship of the sacrum to the surrounding areas. Robert Sapolsky in a fascinating book entitled Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, notes that zebras have very stressful lives. There can be droughts with not enough food. There are lions lurching in the bushes. Zebras don't get ulcers because when a lion comes out of the bush, the zebra takes off running. The zebra is either successful or not. But what the zebra does not do is stress over the event. They don't say to themselves, "why are lions always coming after me? Why did I go to that watering hole? I knew I shouldn't have gone there. What if that bush has a lion behind it? What if that one does? What about that one over there? They don't do this. They just take off running when they sense a lion.
āZebras act on the information that is available to them through their eyes, ears, sense of taste and smell. They don't worry about what might happen if they try something new. The information we take in helps us create an appropriate response, keep us safe, keep us interested and learning and developing. We take the information in via nervous system receptors in the retina of the eye, the central portion of which is called the macula. This is the part that breaks down in macular degeneration. We take in a tremendous amount of information about our surroundings through our primary senses: touch, vision, hearing, taste, smell and intuition. There is a whole range of Information Medicine approaches used to improve your nervous system's ability to take in, interpret and respond to the world of information around you. Often Information Medicine approaches change the way information is carried to your brain. Some examples of Information Medicine approaches are homeopathic remedies, sound and vibration therapies, matrix energetics, integrative manual therapy, colors and visual imagery therapies, and more. Today virtual reality tools are also being used in nervous system rehabilitation with good results. Virtual reality is made up of bits of information, tricking the brain into perceiving that information, pressure, vibration as a solid reality. It is information that is presented in such a way as to convey the feeling of something different from the current reality. Health coaching approaches use questions, choices and number scales to change the clients perspective or response to certain health issues and symptoms. It can also laterally change the way information is conveyed to the brain and how that information is interpreted. There are many famous studies where the placebo out did the actual medication or in some cases the surgery. Placebo surgery is where they cut you open and then do nothing but sew you up again. What is a placebo? We don't have all the data yet but for sure it is not nothing. It carries information, intention and triggers a response in the person. Imagine a factory where they make kaleidoscopes. What do they need in order to be successful? What needs to be in place so that once they have the customers, the relationships set up and the first order comes in, they are ready to go? What needs to be in place for the kaleidoscopes to be produced and then more importantly enjoyed.
āKaleidoscopes are appreciated for their beauty, for the way they change the way we see things, and for the way we can have a completely different perspective when filtering the view through an artistically developed and functional nervous system, I mean kaleidoscope. First they need a space in which to create products and services. Just like an efficient productive factory, our nervous system needs room to function and move. It needs the space to exchange signals and information. The nervous system can thrive in the absence of compression. It needs room to expand and communicate. There are pressure sensors in our body that keep track of just that - too much pressure. Some call it the Goldilocks principle. You don't want too much pressure. You don't want the boundaries too loose. You want them just right. Practitioners of complementary medicine use many approaches to relax muscles, mobilize joints and create enough space for nerve that have been compressed or pinched. Practitioners use techniques with names like: Muscle Energy Technique, Integrative Manual Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Yoga, Pilates, Wisdom Healing Qigong, and other Movement and Manual Therapies - Hands-on Therapies Once the factory owner has bought the land and built the space in which to develop his business, he needs to ensure that no one breaks into his factory and messes things up. Our nervous system is like the flashing red warning lights, the impossibly loud alarm, the Doberman's and the wall all rolled into one. Our nervous system needs, and maintains many of the protective mechanisms in the body. It needs to have a good boundary and safety system in place. The need for exchange from the outside and security issues for the internal environment have to be balanced. The security system needs to have a way to gain information from outside the perimeter, keep track of what is going on inside the perimeter, recognize the patterns of activity and identify friends and enemies. Our nervous system needs information in order to keep us alive and thriving. The observer feeding us that information is our sensory system with visual, auditory, taste and scent information as well as touch related data. Once the space and security system is in place, the nervous system and all the tissues in the body need nutrients, the raw materials with which to build the walls and fibers of the individual nerve cells, the essential fatty layer around the cell that speeds up the communication system, the neurotransmitters and hormonal signaling system, and the electrolytes like sodium, potassium and calcium are needed to maintain the proper electrical balance across the system. Many alternative medicine practitioners can feel the hum or vibration of a well tuned nervous system. Nutrients like proteins and fats are needed to build the system. They need to make their way into the digestive system at lunch time otherwise there is no chance they will make it to the nerve endings in the toes. Oxygen needs to move into the lungs, and from there into the blood stream in order for it to reach the sciatic nerves of the hips. The blood has to be flowing as well and that comes back to the compression issue. Blood vessels and nerves do best when they have space enough to adjust to our movement. What you don't want is a tether ball-like situation where part of the nerve or blood vessels is stuck while it gets moved around. The nervous system also need fuels to generate energy. The brain needs carbohydrates and sugars to be broken down into glucose, while at the same time, too much sugar is toxic to the nervous system as in Diabetic Neuropathy and too little will put you in a coma. Goldilocks again. It needs to be balanced just right. There is also a way in which time is a nutrient or a toxin depending on how it is used. For example you take someone with seizure activity add in the nutrients needed plus time can resolve the problem. So how does the body sense whether there are enough nutrients or too many waste products and toxins? Chemical sensors tell your body the makeup of the blood flowing to the nerves, to the brain. There are a number of complementary medicine approaches which address the nutrients flowing into the body, into the nervous system and influence the communication between the nervous system and the digestive system and other networks in the body. These approaches include, Enriched Environments, Visceral Manipulation, Nutritional Therapies, Energy Medicine and Acupuncture. Information is also like a nutrient that feeds our need for an interesting stimulating environment, ensuring a proper response which means we will be safe and thrive. Input data also gives us a reference around which we can model our selves or our nervous system. For example a person's nervous system will do better if they are seeing a practitioner whose nervous system is well regulated and calm. It is as if the client can model their nervous system after the practitioners. This is also important in leaders. A employees or followers can model their nervous system set point on a calm skilled leader or a rabble rouser inciting a mob. What kind of nervous system health are you modeling or expressing into the work environment? āAll the time, even when we are sleeping, we are picking up information from our environment. Every moment our system is evaluating. Are we safe? Is there danger? Is there an opportunity for food or pleasure or a reward? ā It is the translating that can be challenging but, if you can really see in the first place, along with the obstacles you can see the opportunities to translate your vision of the future into a reality enjoyed by many. I see you! Four things have to happen, in order to clearly say, "I see you!" Is it difficult for you to see your colleagues, clients, strangers, potential friends, or supportive team members in a positive light? For many people struggling as they age with both eyesight loss and a decline in business insights, one of these four vision elements are often missing or damaged. Part One: Lights and Color The light reflecting off your face has to reach my eyes, traveling undistorted through the cornea, the pupil, the lens, the vitreous fluid until it reaches the retina and the central portion of the retina, the macula. Simple exercises and guided visualizations that improve the way your eyes take in light improves your ability to see clearly the street signs on a dark rainy night, the expression in a delighted customer's face, and the print in an innovative book. Tools and techniques that improve your eye health and function eliminates the pain of dry eyes and the headaches induced by strained fatigued eyes as well as the pain of missed opportunities and a lack of clear focus. Part Two: The Pathway: The Retina, the Macula and the Brain In the eye, the retina, the macula, the rods and the cones turn colorful light waves (energy) into electrochemical signals (matter) which travel along the nerves. Each new signal strengthens an old rut or lays down a new pathway. Fifteen or twenty years ago, a neurologist might have said, the macula or central nervous system part of the retina, the brain and spinal cord can't heal but today's research and the experience of thousands of individuals indicates that all these parts of the nervous system can heal. Tools and techniques that improve brain health improve your ability to see clearly, coordinate eye movement so that you can judge the distance between your bumper and mine. It also enables you to respond to boundaries and relationships and remember what you have read or seen. Using exercises, cross word puzzles and good nutrition that support your nervous system health can improve your vision and help you avoid Alzheimer's disease or forgetting the details of an advertising campaign. Part Three: Pattern Recognition, Visual Memory and Assigning Meaning Once the electrochemical information arrives in the occipital area (visual cortex in the back of the head), the limbic system (protective part of the brain) and the amygdala (emotional centers in the brain) and the hypothalamus (balance and sleep-wake regulation centers) the process of recognizing the pattern and assigning meaning to the information begins. This happens almost instantaneously in the healthy brain, where what is before you right now is coordinated with visual memories, past experiences and emotions. Alternative medicine techniques, brain health exercises and learning a new language can all contribute to improved cognition, learning abilities, and pattern recognition. Why is pattern recognition important? It allows you to avoid car accidents by improving your ability to see the flow of traffic and where your opportunities lie. It allows you to recognize people and places that are familiar and helps you feel safe and included. It allows you to use visual information, what you see to plan where you place your foot for the next balanced step as well as recognizing the kindness in a stranger's face. In fact, it is now estimated that visual perception is 80 percent memory and 20 percent input through the eyes. In other words, "sensory information is not transmitted to the brain; it comes from it," said Richard Gregory in āBrainy Mind', British Medical Journal, 19 December 1998, issue 317: pp. 1693ā1695 Part Four: The Action: Visual Coordination and Response The final step in really seeing the people and things around you, is the response as you translate the bits of light, chemicals and electrical impulses pulsing through your brain, as well as the interpretations and meanings you assign the images into an action or into reality. Your response might be to move your arm muscles and reach out to shake a person's hand or congratulate them with a pat on the back. Your response might be a facial expression that conveys happiness, disgust, fear or another emotion. The success of your leadership depends on how you convey your response to what you perceive. Is your response, the response you want to convey? Are you seeing what you want to see in terms of progress in your business? In your response is also the element of hand-eye coordination, of balancing the light and color you take in with your other sensations and experience. Vision and visual perception forms the basis for physical prowess and your ability to move in the world. Your visual ability influences the way you take the stage at a conference or walk into an important business meeting. You response might feel warm or cold to a colleague as they see you and your response to them, to their expressions in the world. And so when I see you and you see me there is a fork in the road with the potential for something beautiful or a sense of alienation. Most Americans report that, of all disabilities, loss of eyesight would have the greatest impact on their daily life, according to a recent survey by the NIH's National Eye Institute (NEI). Fear of vision loss ranks ahead of loss of memory, speech, arm or leg, and hearing. After all, 80 percent of the sensory information the brain receives comes from your eyes. How clearly do you see the bits of light? What is the state of the tissue, electrical networks and chemical soup between your ears? How are you interpreting what you see and assigning meaning? Do you see me? Or your colleagues, customers and clients? The words, "visionary leadership" are frequently bandied about but what do they mean?
If we characterize a visionary leader as someone who has vision or foresight, then it is worth considering whether we are talking about physical eyesight ā the ability to see the expression on another person's face, the eyesight to recognize the beauty in the world amongst the ugliness, or to literally differentiate the pattern of opportunities from dysfunction. How is your eyesight? Can you find comfort and a sense of inclusion in the ways in which you are similar to those around you and learn from unique individuals who are very different from you? Often we don't see how we are connected in unexpected ways. Our expectation literally changes our ability to see, recognize and interpret the light waves coming our way. A few years ago, a three-year-old with blond hair, the color of corn silk drawled in her Virginia accent, "your hair and my hair are the same." My brown hair, had started to go grey when I was twenty, by the time I was 50, it was completely white. I smiled at her and said, "honey, I wish that were true." She could see a connection, where I did not. There are times when I forget to look for the similarities. I get comfortable hiding, camouflaging the parts of myself that I am not at ease with. I start thinking, as long as I don't move, grow, or learn, I can keep myself safe from feeling alone, misunderstood and different. Sure, I can focus on the ways in which we are different. Perhaps you are a man, and that differentiates you from half of the seven billion human beings on this planet. The earth is also half full of women and I can look at the ways in which I am the same as them. Three and a half billion is an awful lot of people to share something in common with. Although I don't think I look at all like a chimpanzee, I share 98.5 percent of my DNA sequences with chimpanzees, so my similarity with you and with other human beings is even greater. You and I and she are the same. I know, I know, I said we are not the same and I don't know you. I do know something about you though. You are human and just that connects us on some level to the other seven billion people on this planet. You understand English, along with up to 1.5 billion other people. And yet I am also unique. There is only a one in seven billion chances that a living person on planet earth was born in Provo, Utah, USA, to an international businessman and an artist, and grew up in Los Angeles, California; Bogota, Colombia; Brussels, Belgium, and then lived in Tokyo, Japan, Toronto, Canada, who found herself in Tel Aviv, Israel on September 11th, 2001 after a magnificent scuba diving trip in Egypt. It is a unique combination of events and circumstances, which influences how I "look" to you, but each place, each node of my life, provides a potential intersection, something we have in common. A reason, if you will, for why you and I don't have to feel alone, different, or alienated from each other. No one ever says, "I feel normal. I fit perfectly here." Everyone wants to feel safe, and no one does. That has to change because when all seven billion of us feels like we fit, we will have global peace and the abundance each one of us seeks for ourselves and our families. I See You. Here is a simple exercise to change how you "see people". How Are You and I The Same Game This exercises is great for eliminating depression and alienation. It can also raise self-esteem and a sense of belonging and contribution in a team. If you are a business leader trying to create better professional relationships, do this for yourself and see what changes in your relationship not only to your colleagues and customers, but with everyone else as well. Also while doing this, best to keep in mind the saying, "People change all the time, but you ā you can't change them. Part One: Every day for a week, spend five minutes thinking about the people who are most important in your life. Make a list of the ways in which you are similar or connected. Each day add something new. Part Two: During the week for every person you come in contact with, consciously fill in the blank (quietly to yourself or you can tell someone): You and I are the same because we both are / have _____________. You can fill in the blank with whatever you want. You might be the same height, or members of the same community or have the same color hair or the same number of children or the same color car. For people you know well you can fill in the blank with deeply personal characteristics or for the stranger you can fill in a sensation, something you see, hear, or can touch. And sometimes when you are in a hurry you might fill in the blank with five fingers or women.
