Poetry and Yoga
"Poetic autoethnography provides a research methodology to explore yoga as a mind-body intervention that creates sanctuary. Using this qualitative method and retrieving data from my personal journals, daily workout journals, experiences as a lesbian-identified participant in yoga classes, and yoga instructor, I turn the research lens on myself in order to examine my sociological life story. At a critical time in my life when I was struggling with the fragmentation, anxiety, and despair resulting from dealing with homophobia in a heteronormative world, yoga provided sanctuary for me. My yoga practice increased my self-efficacy, providing transferable techniques for finding refuge within myself, irrespective of the adversity I was facing in my life. Places of sanctuary are critical for members of minority groups who often face marginalization and oppression, which compromise their well-being." - Myers, K. (2017). The Poetry Posse 2019
The Year of the Poet project was the brain-child of Jamie Bond and William S. Peters, Sr. The original vision was to commit themselves to writing and publishing a book a month for the year of 2014. In further discussion the vision expanded to include the other Gifted & Talented Writers you see below. The objective is to bring the Poetry Community together with the various cross demographic representations found in Gender, Religion, Geography, Culture and Ethnicity. We hope you enjoy the myriad of perspectives represented here. Thank You, Inner Child Press International. Gail Weston Shazor. This is a creative promise ~ my pen will speak to and for the world. Enamored with letters and respectful of their power, I have been writing for most of my life. A mother, daughter, sister and grandmother I give what I have been given, greatfilledly. Author of "An Overstanding of an Imperfect Love" & Notes from the Blue Roof Lies My Grandfathers Told Me available at Inner Child Press. Albert ‘Infinite’ Carrasco. I'm a project life philanthropist, I speak about the non ethical treatment of poor ghetto people. Why? My family was their equal, my great grandmother and great grandfather was poor, my grandmother and grandfather, my mother and father, poverty to my family was a sequel, a traditional Inheritance of the subliminal. I paid attention to the decades of regression, i tried to make change, but when I came to the fork in the road and looked at the signs that read wrong < > right, I chose the left, the wrong direction, because of street life interactions a lot around me met death or incarceration. I failed myself and others. I regret my decisions, I can't reincarnate dead men, but I can give written visions in laymens. I'm back at that fork in the road, instead of it saying wrong or right, I changed it, now it says dead men < > life. He's been a victim of his own shyness often sidelined in his own quest for love. He became the observer, charting life's path. Taking note of the why, people do what they do. His writings oft times strike a cord with the dormant strings of the reader. His pen the rosined bow drawn across the mind. We are an international group of poets from countries like the United States, Canada, Polands, Turkey, China, Jordan, India, Lebanon and more. We are starting on our sixth year as a collective publishing a book of poetry every month for the last 60 months. We are also diverse in our religious affiliations and practices. Each year there is a cover theme. There have been flowers, trees, gems and birds. Last year, we focus each monthly volume on a society and culture including Maori (December), Highlands Scots, Nez Perce, Oceania, Northern Africa and more.
We feel that our poetry creates understanding, improved relationships and international cooperation. We would like to focus our poetry this year on indigenous languages, growing awareness of the value of linguistic and cultural diversity, learning from those who are different and appreciating our similarities. The Inner Child Poetry Posse writes a volume of The Year of The Poet each month with different themes and would like to designate the indigenous languages as the theme for 2019 William S. Peters, Sr. is the founder and leader of the collective and many of us are award winning poets who have presented at International poetry events. A study notes that when we experience the beauty of poetry we experience it in specific parts of the brain, including the insula which is deep to the temporal lobe or the ear and side of the head. The insula (one on each side of the brain) is linked to consciousness, emotional health, and regulation of the body's homeostasis (balance). Functions also include compassion, empathy, perception, movement or motor control, self-awareness, cognitive (thinking) functions, and interpersonal experience.
What if reading and writing poetry could increase our ability to perceive beauty around us as well as increase our balance, empathy and compassion.. This is what the research says about our appreciation of beauty and how it is linked with the brain. "Chinese poetry has a long history and high esthetic value. People who engage esthetically with Chinese poetry would feel the sense of beauty naturally. However, there is little information regarding what happens in the brain when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry, and how the brain processes the subject's appreciation of beauty. Herein, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrates of experiencing beauty by appreciating Chinese poetry. The participants in our study were 28 college students and the stimuli consisted of 25 Chinese poetry and 25 prose selections. Based on an event-related paradigm, the findings of this study suggested that different areas scattered in both the left and right cerebral hemispheres are activated when an individual appreciates Chinese poetry. Compared to reading prose, appreciating Chinese poetry heightens the activation of the left inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the bilateral insula, the left fusiform, the left supplementary motor area (SMA), and the left precentral gyrus. In these areas, the left inferior OFC and the bilateral insula are considered closely related to experiencing beauty of Chinese poetry, which have been demonstrated that it is an important neural basis of esthetic beauty when using other types of materials. The findings of this study shed new light on the complex but ordinary processes of experiencing beauty when appreciating Chinese poetry and show that some key processes underlying the feeling of esthetic beauty are shared across different esthetic domains." -Gao, C. and C. Guo (2018). "The Experience of Beauty of Chinese Poetry and Its Neural Substrates." Front Psychol 9: 1540.

Allen or Jackie Allen, grew up in the Cumberland Mountains of Appalachia. As the next eldest daughter of a coal miner father and a stay at home mother, she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. Considering medical poetry: "I feel that there’s this worry that poetry that responds to illness is always going to be depressing. Nobody likes to see someone else’s pain. It’s hard. But these poems are in some ways just so transcendent. They are inspiring in how they seek a kind of response, a kind of healing in the face of dire situations, dire health issues."
"Another thing I see, which is gratifying, is that doctors are, in a way, rediscovering what called them to medicine in the first place through these poems, and again, those basic gestures of empathy, of compassion, of really hearing another’s voice, someone who perhaps doesn’t have a voice in the larger culture. I see poems that are very moving and, I think, potentially life changing for the poets and for those who read the poems." -Rafael Campo, MD ’92, believes in the power of imagination to make sense of suffering, to heal, if not the body, then the heart. As a physician, he has been dedicated to this idea for nearly 25 years. As a poet, though, Campo’s been writing to heal for a good deal longer. His dual approach has been newly recognized: On Jan. 1, he became editor of JAMA’s Poetry and Medicine section. "The immigrants of the past were often so consumed with their own problems in settling that they did not see the problems of the peoples they were displacing. Conquest by design or by domination led to the near-annihilation (Wright, 1992; Pearkes, nd) of populations of indigenous peoples. Their traditional cultures, languages, and beliefs were often lost or nearly lost.
At the same time, Canada is a country so large that it would seem to have room to share. Multiculturalism has, at times, almost succeeded. Diverse people have been brought together and a country of tolerance, albeit imperfectly, has evolved. Many Canadians have the perception that this is a country of peace-keepers. A former Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for his efforts in setting up the United Nations Peace-keeping forces. In 1998, Canada led the way to the signing of the Anti-Personnel Landmine Treaty. A bi-lingual, bi-cultural country has persisted with very little violence. Is Canada, as Elise Boulding in Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History (2000: 239-241) intimates, one of the “middle powers” that can initiate peace?" - Linda Wilkinson, Canada, the European University Center for Peace Studies Stadstschlaining/Burg, Austria Mir Centre for Peace, The Mir Centre for Peace builds and understands cultures of peace through learning and dialogue. Our programs and lectures make a significant new contribution to Peace Studies and Justice Studies in Canada and the world. http://selkirk.ca/mir-centre-for-peace The Mir Centre was established in 1999 with the mandate of understanding and building cultures of peace through education. Mir, an ancient Russian word with the complex meaning of peace, community and world, encompasses and defines the following values: Peace and social justice for the individual, family, community and the world Respect for cultural, ethnic, philosophical, spiritual, religious and intellectual diversity Dignity of work and service to humanity Education and learning which advance these values It is housed in a restored early 20th century Doukhobor communal dwelling. The history of the Mir Centre for Peace began in 1966 when the college inherited the buildings and site, but the rich history of this magnificent piece of land and the people who have lived here, stretches back for centuries.

What word for peace would you choose if you made up your own language? How would you spell "peace" if you had only ever heard the word and never read it? imagine if a cow or a rat ate your only book what words would you teach your children with no way to check the truth of your words would you make up words and meaning Make up a language describe the community that speaks that language what are the words for peace calm quiet tranquil Sometimes it takes more than one word to get the meaning across. It takes a community of peace to write peace in some languages. It is not a bad thing it just takes more people more connections more sounds to call peace into being. Say the word peace in whatever language you would like as loudly as you can. Tell someone about your commitment to peace and to health for yourself and others.
This study indicates how poetry can persuade, move and please people. Think about how you feel when you read poetry.
"Rhetorical theory suggests that rhythmic and metrical features of language substantially contribute to persuading, moving, and pleasing an audience. A potential explanation of these effects is offered by "cognitive fluency theory," which stipulates that recurring patterns (e.g., meter) enhance perceptual fluency and can lead to greater aesthetic appreciation. In this article, we explore these two assertions by investigating the effects of meter and rhyme in the reception of poetry by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Participants listened to four versions of lyrical stanzas that varied in terms of meter and rhyme, and rated the stanzas for rhythmicity and aesthetic liking. The behavioral and ERP results were in accord with enhanced liking and rhythmicity ratings for metered and rhyming stanzas. The metered and rhyming stanzas elicited smaller N400/P600 ERP responses than their nonmetered, nonrhyming, or nonmetered and nonrhyming counterparts. In addition, the N400 and P600 effects for the lyrical stanzas correlated with aesthetic liking effects (metered-nonmetered), implying that modulation of the N400 and P600 has a direct bearing on the aesthetic appreciation of lyrical stanzas. We suggest that these effects are indicative of perceptual-fluency-enhanced aesthetic liking, as postulated by cognitive fluency theory." - Obermeier, C., S. A. Kotz, et al. (2016). "Aesthetic appreciation of poetry correlates with ease of processing in event-related potentials." Cogn Affect Behav Neurosci 16(2): 362-373. In other words we like things or people better when we receive information fluently and rhythmically.

Does adding a vowel make a language
there is a saying the difference between a dialect and a language a language has an army Is "pokój" peace in Polish so different from "pokoju" peace in Silesian with it's extra vowel sound No one agrees whether Silesian is a dialect of Polish or a separate language influenced by Polish and German "Pokój" is also peace in Upper Sorbian or the Wendish spoken in Germany and in Slovak uttered in Slovakia same words different languages And then there is an extra consonant "spokoj" peace in Bosnian which most agree is a different language

"It is a common experience-and well established experimentally-that music can engage us emotionally in a compelling manner. The mechanisms underlying these experiences are receiving increasing scrutiny. However, the extent to which other domains of aesthetic experience can similarly elicit strong emotions is unknown. Using psychophysiology, neuroimaging and behavioral responses, we show that recited poetry can act as a powerful stimulus for eliciting peak emotional responses, including chills and objectively measurable goosebumps that engage the primary reward circuitry. Importantly, while these responses to poetry are largely analogous to those found for music, their neural underpinnings show important differences, specifically with regard to the crucial role of the nucleus accumbens. We also go beyond replicating previous music-related studies by showing that peak aesthetic pleasure can co-occur with physiological markers of negative affect. Finally, the distribution of chills across the trajectory of poems provides insight into compositional principles of poetry." - Wassiliwizky, E., S. Koelsch, et al. (2017). This study notes that there is a relationship between the sounds of language, pitch and speed of speech and perceived emotions.
"Conveying emotions in spoken poetry may be based on a poem's semantic content and/or on emotional prosody, i.e., on acoustic features above single speech sounds. However, hypotheses of more direct sound-emotion relations in poetry, such as those based on the frequency of occurrence of certain phonemes, have not withstood empirical (re)testing. Therefore, we investigated sound-emotion associations based on prosodic features as a potential alternative route for the, at least partially, non-semantic expression and perception of emotions in poetry. We first conducted a pre-study designed to validate relevant parameters of joy- and sadness-supporting prosody in the recitation, i.e. acoustic production, of poetry. The parameters obtained thereof guided the experimental modification of recordings of German joyful and sad poems such that for each poem, three prosodic variants were constructed: one with a joy-supporting prosody, one with a sadness-supporting prosody, and a neutral variant. In the subsequent experiment, native German speakers and participants with no command of German rated the joyfulness and sadness of these three variants. This design allowed us to investigate the role of emotional prosody, operationalized in terms of sound-emotion parameters, both in combination with and dissociated from semantic access to the emotional content of the poems. The findings from our pre-study showed that the emotional content of poems (based on pre-classifications into joyful and sad) indeed predicted the prosodic features pitch and articulation rate. The subsequent perception experiment revealed that cues provided by joyful and sad prosody specifically affect non-German-speaking listeners' emotion ratings of the poems. Thus, the present investigation lends support to the hypothesis of prosody-based iconic relations between perceived emotion and sound qualia. At the same time, our findings also highlight that semantic access substantially decreases the role of cross-language sound-emotion associations and indicate that non-German-speaking participants may also use phonetic and prosodic cues other than the ones that were targeted and manipulated here." - Kraxenberger, M., W. Menninghaus, et al. (2018). "Prosody-Based Sound-Emotion Associations in Poetry." Front Psychol 9: 1284.
The Poetry Posse 2018
Are you right or left or bilaterally dominant when it comes to language? We can now tell with a verb generation task and an MRI. A recent study looked at a reliable assessment of language lateralization in people with epilepsy prior to neurosurgery. "In 76 patients with epilepsy, a language lateralization index was calculated using the verb-generation fMRI task over a wide range of activation thresholds (from a permissive threshold, analyzing all brain regions, to a harsh threshold, analyzing only the strongest activations). The data were classified using a probabilistic logistic regression method. Concordant results between fMRI and Wada lateralization were observed in 89% of patients. Bilateral and right-dominant groups showed similar fMRI lateralization patterns differentiating them from the left-dominant group but still allowing classification in 82% of patients. These findings present the utility of a semi-supervised probabilistic learning approach for presurgical language-dominance mapping, which may be extended to other cognitive domains such as memory and attention." A crucial aspect of neurosurgery within or close to eloquent cortex is the preoperative identification of brain regions involved in a number of cognitive, sensory, or motor tasks. In the presurgical assessment of language, both the localization38 and lateralization28,32 of functional areas are essential for the prevention of postoperative deficits such as aphasia and dysarthria. More specifically, assessing language lateralization in patients with epilepsy is challenging and complex because of their atypical language network. Language structure among this group tends to be more variable,40 less lateralized,11 and more subject to plasticity effects21 as compared with a healthy population. Participants were asked to produce a verb that related to the nouns being presented. "Functional MRI examinations included 2 verb-generation tasks (auditory and visual), during which patients were asked to covertly generate a verb in response to various nouns being presented. The verb-generation task has been found to be reliable in prompting repeated activation of language areas in many fMRI studies10,15,45 and has been widely studied as part of a presurgical mapping protocol.35,36 Additionally, in comparison with alternative fMRI paradigms, the verb-generation task has been shown to be the task most highly correlated with Wada laterality results.36 Twenty-one common Hebrew nouns were presented in blocks of 7 nouns, with each block requiring 20–22 seconds. Each of the 7 nouns in a block was presented for 500 msec, with an interstimulus interval of 2–3 seconds. Rest periods of 20–30 seconds were provided between the blocks, and the entire test lasted 204 seconds. For the auditory task patients listened to a recording of nouns using a headset. For the visual task a set of pictures depicting objects were shown to the patient on a computer screen (with a white background). - Gazit, T., F. Andelman, et al. (2016). Using Light To Paint Poems Into Being
Light is a word and a symbol, a way of seeing and describing the world. Poems can incorporate the words for light and colors as if the pen is a paint brush creating an image that the readers modify for themselves, upon reading the words: light, dark, red, blue, shadow and sunlight. Light poems can describe what happens in the light and the darkness and the shadows, as well as illuminating a particular scene important to the poet. Light poems can be about physics and energy, the way the universe works and the sun shines and what the poet sees. Visual poetry can be a marriage of words and art each brightening the other. Visual poetry may also create visualizations, influencing the brain and what we think about as we read. Light is a word, a metaphor, and a way of seeing the community and opportunities around us. Except from The Year of The Poet February 2018 Kinzeraba, The Holy Treasure Observe a kernel of light in darkness learn goodness discovered within evil live until death fully ever a role for human beings in cosmic explosions Growth in the world two branches of olive meeting across four sides of the universe draped in pure shimmering silk the book of life first to last pages flutter full Great blessings rise up all colors streaming from light and water comes expansive life Light Switching on at work darkest day just beginning power gratitude Paws & Hooves Together paws and hooves pounding the frozen landscape wearing a path where they sprint like a pack of wild ones Two sleep inside slumbering on the carpet near the bed Two rest outside laying snuggly together in a small barn Meeting in the daylight to dash and dart paws and hooves thundering

Poet-In-Residence Position
I am looking for guest blog opportunities and a position as poet-in-residence. My current project is writing dictionary poems using words in different languages for the English word "peace." You can read some of my poems on Poemhunter . As poet-in-residence I would write poems on different words in different languages and broadcast them throughout the social media blogosphere. Each poem would link back to your site where the word or language appeared. I would expect some sort of stipend and a six month to one year placement. Please contact me for details if your organization is interested in having a poet-in-residence to help get your message out. Nervewhisperer@gmial.com Buy the print or eBook, review Awakenings then contact Kimberly for a free 20 minute brain health consultation. Email or Phone
(Regular rates $120 per hour or 10 sessions for $650.) (Integrative Medicine)
